Clock is ticking for a TfL funding deal

The most recent Transport for London (TfL) funding deal is due to expire tomorrow Friday 24 June 2022.

Discussions about the future of TfL finances have been ongoing since the start of the pandemic.



The London Assembly has today amended the Chair’s motion at Mayor’s Question Time to call on the Government to provide a fair and sustainable funding settlement for TfL.

Elly Baker AM, who proposed the amended motion said:

“With just over 24 hours to go until the deadline, it is both very concerning and disappointing that the Government has not yet put a funding deal on the table for TfL to consider.

“Over the last few years, there has been an overwhelming chorus of calls for Minsters to provide TfL with a fair and long-term funding deal coming out the pandemic.

“Without this and with any further delay, we will see significant cuts to tube and bus services and key infrastructure projects being shelved.

"Londoners are already seeing the impact of this and simply can’t afford another short-term, sticking plaster deal".

The full text of the amended motion is:

“That the Assembly notes the answers to the questions asked.

The Assembly further notes the current Transport for London (TfL) funding and finance package is due to come to an end on 24 June 2022.

The Assembly places on record its disappointment with the previous short-term funding deals offered by the Government. If fair, long-term revenue and capital funding deals are not reached, Londoners and businesses will face unacceptable and unfair cuts to transport services.

Therefore, we call on the Mayor and the Chair of the Assembly to write a joint letter to the Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps, calling on the Government to provide a fair and sustainable funding settlement for TfL.”
