Car Clubs – what’s the future?

Car clubs
Created on
13 June 2017

There are approximately 193,500 car club members in London and around ten car clubs. Transport for London (TfL) has committed to aiming for one million members by 2025.

Most members hire cars for leisure purposes, while only a small minority use car clubs for commuting.

Some claim they offer a convenient and affordable service, while at the same time reducing overall car usage – which can help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

  • What gap in the transport system do car clubs aim to fill?
  • Do car clubs discourage people from cycling or using public transport?
  • Are car clubs placing pressure on parking provision?
  • Should car clubs be an option in TfL’s journey planner and could they be paid for using an Oyster card?
  • Has there been any change in policy on car clubs since the new Mayor was elected?

The London Assembly Transport Committee meets tomorrow to consider the future of car clubs and the implications of their potential expansion. The guests are:

  • Lilli Matson, Head of Strategy & Outcome Planning, TfL
  • Cllr Julian Bell, Chair of London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee
  • James Taylor, UK Director, Drive Now
  • Jonathan Hampson, General Manager, Zipcar UK
  • Alistair Kirkbride, Executive Director, Carplus
  • Ed Gillespie, Co-Founder, Futerra

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 14 June from 10:00am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
