Violent crime committed against people continues to rise according to new figures released to the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee.

The latest crime statistics for the year up to April 2018, sourced from the Met, show that violence has increased significantly compared to the previous year:

  • Knife crime offences up 18.3% - 14,811 for the year up to April 2018 compared to 12,515 up to April 2017
  • Common Assault up 9.1%
  • Serious Youth Violence up 9.6%

Steve O’Connell AM, Chairman of the Police and Crime Committee, said:

“We continue to see a depressing rise in shocking crimes which leave Londoners vulnerable to the most harmful types of criminality which can leave people scared and with a legacy of emotional and physical problems.

“We are determined to find out what is working and what is not in the battle against violence in London.”

The Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to question representatives of the Met and Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) on how well they are tackling the serious issues facing London.

Questions will be on violent crime, changes to bail arrangements, child protection and facial recognition technology.

The guests are:

  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
  • Martin Hewitt QPM, Assistant Commissioner, Metropolitan Police Service

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 6 June, 2018 from 10am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend
