Assembly response to Government’s EU immigration white paper

Brexit
Created on
19 December 2018

The Government has published its white paper on EU immigration after Brexit. The paper proposes that EU nationals who come to work in Britain must earn a minimum of £30,000.

Almost half of all jobs in London pay less than this figure[1].

In response, Len Duvall AM, Chair of the London Assembly EU Exit Working Group, said:

“London is reliant on people of all skill levels, many of whom earn below £30,000.

“A salary hurdle could do irreparable damage to the fabric of London life, especially in the health, retail and hospitality sectors.

“The challenges London will face after we leave the EU are unique to London alone. Policies that may work in the Midlands or in the North East will not necessarily work for London.

“We urge the Government to rethink this arbitrary threshold, which would severely damage the capital’s economy.”
