The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is investing £11 million into temporary modular homes to help homeless families in the capital.
Nicky Gavron AM, Chair of the Planning Committee, said:
“With shamefully high numbers in temporary accommodation, much of it substandard, this initiative is very welcome and exactly what we have been advocating. In our 2017 report Designed, Sealed, Delivered [1] we called on the Mayor to show leadership in raising the potential of offsite manufactured homes (OSM) in tackling London’s housing crisis.
“We saw for ourselves how precision manufactured housing could translate into a quick and high quality home-building model that can meet the needs of Londoners, including homeless families, older people and single households.
“They have added benefits – including the reduction of carbon emissions and growth in jobs and skills – but housing the homeless must be a key priority and we are pleased the Mayor agrees with us that OSM can play a meaningful role.”
