Assembly condemns vandalism of memorials

Created on
07 February 2019

In recent weeks, a spate of vandalism has hit five important memorials in the capital.

White paint was splashed over the memorials which are an important part of our culture and heritage.

Met Police are treating the incidents as linked.

Today, the London Assembly condemned the acts of vandalism.

Shaun Bailey AM, who proposed the motion said:

“Those represented by these memorials are heroes in their own ways, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for us, today, to remain free. These statues are a fitting tribute to what they did for us and a reminder of what we owe them.

“These abhorrent acts of vandalism are an affront to memory of those commemorated and an insult to our democracy, to British values and to our way of life.

“This motion is an opportunity for the London Assembly to unite against this disgraceful vandal and demonstrate that they will never succeed in discrediting our country’s great heroes”.

The full text of the motion is:

“This Assembly condemns the vandalism in London of the RAF Bomber Command Memorial, the memorial to murdered Police Woman Yvonne Fletcher, the Graspan Royal Marines Memorial, the Canada Memorial, and the Allies Statue of former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and former US President Franklin D Roosevelt.”
