In response to the Mayor’s announcement of a further £30m of investment in policing in London, and an additional £8m in violence prevention initiatives, local London Assembly Member, Andrew Dismore AM, said:
“With lockdown measures set to ease slowly in the coming months, our local police teams must have the resources to clamp down on a potential rise in violent crime.
“We have seen how overstretched officers have been during this pandemic in their efforts to both keep us safe and enforce the lockdown rules in our communities.
“This is why this new investment from City Hall to keep 1,000 extra officers patrolling our capital’s streets and protect the most vulnerable young Londoners from gang exploitation is so vital.
“The Mayor has now put in over a billion pounds into policing over the last five years, which has helped to plug the huge funding cuts imposed by the Government over the last decade. But this should not let Ministers off the hook, and they must now back our officers by reimbursing the significant extra costs the Met has faced in responding to the pandemic so far”.
