The Greater London Authority (GLA) was established on July 3rd 2000, following a local referendum. It consists of two political branches: the executive Mayoralty and the 25 Member London Assembly, which serves as a means of checks and balances on the Mayor.
Today, on the 19th Birthday of the GLA, the London Assembly releases its Annual Report. ‘How the London Assembly works for you’, details how the Assembly has highlighted important issues for Londoners during 2018-19.
Some achievements which feature in the report include:
- We recommended cutting the use of single use packaging in our ‘Bottled water’ report and the Mayor has committed to supporting that, as well as to work to reduce the use of single‐use plastic bottles through installing water fountains.
- We broke the news about how much the Crossrail delay was going to cost TfL in lost passenger income (£200m).
- We questioned the Mayor, the TfL Commissioner and the former Chair of Crossrail about the delay to the project in an effort to find out who was to blame, having summonsed correspondence and reports that had not been available to the public.
- We uncovered just how much the London Stadium and West Ham had spent fighting each other in court (£4m) and we had both sides before us to present their case.
Tony Arbour AM, Chairman of the Assembly during 2018/19, said:
“On our 19th birthday, it’s timely to take a look back at the work the Assembly has undertaken on behalf of all Londoners.
“This interactive report, complete with publication links, video and icons brings the achievements of the Assembly, its Members and Committees to life.”
