Olympics Strike Action

  • Reference: 2007/2749
  • Question by: Roger Evans
  • Meeting date: 14 November 2007
The Mayor will have noted the strike action that French transport unions took to cause chaos during the recent Rugby World Cup. Given the Mayor has previously stated his unwillingness to lobby for no-strike legislation to protect those who travel by public transport from disruption, and given that he has stated that he was powerless to stop the RMT from striking in September, what provision has he made to ensure that the car-free Olympics of 2012 cannot be paralysed by industrial action?

Crossrail

  • Reference: 2007/2748
  • Question by: Roger Evans
  • Meeting date: 14 November 2007
Would the Mayor agree that Crossrail would have been a major boon for the Olympics and that while it may have been politically convenient for Gordon Brown to have been unable to contribute Government funding to Crossrail until he was Prime Minister, it is to the great detriment of Londoners that we will not benefit from it until at least 2017?

There has rightly been a great deal of emphasis regarding the need for the Olympics to leave a sustainable legacy. How will the Mayor ensure that the aim of a car-free Olympics doesn't mean that the great many of the improvements that London's roads require are ignored or neglected?
