Oxford Street to go traffic-free to showcase transformative benefits of proposals to pedestrianise the iconic street

  • Nation’s most famous high street, Oxford Street, will go traffic-free from Orchard Street to Oxford Circus on Sunday 21st September, for a landmark free event open to all
  • One-day road closure will offer a glimpse of what Oxford Street could look like in the future as Transport for London develops proposals for consultation on pedestrianisation of Oxford Street following the overwhelmingly positive response to the public consultation held earlier this year
  • Consultation showed around 7 in 10 back the Mayor’s transformative plans to regenerate Oxford Street, with two-thirds specifically supporting the idea of pedestrianisation
  • Next month’s event will take place between 12pm and 8pm and showcase Oxford Street through a series of themed areas, spanning fashion, sport, music, food, heritage and much more
  • City Hall working in close partnership with shops and venues on Oxford Street, with event partners, offers and deals to be announced in the coming weeks
  • Partners include Major League Baseball, retailer Holland & Barrett curating a wellness zone at the event and a pop-up installation hosted by charitable non-profit organisation Choose Love

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has today announced that half a mile of the nation’s most famous high street, Oxford Street, will go traffic-free on Sunday 21st September, for a landmark ‘This is Oxford Street’ event.

‘This is Oxford Street’ will see part of the iconic road free of traffic from 12pm until 8pm for the first event of its kind, giving Londoners and visitors a glimpse of what the street could look like in the future. The event will bring together fashion, food, music, sport, music, heritage and community in one place, showcasing the best of Oxford Street’s past, present and the Mayor’s bold vision for the future.

It comes as Sadiq moves ahead with proposals to pedestrianise Oxford Street and supercharge regeneration in the area following the overwhelmingly positive response from Londoners to plans for the transformation of Oxford Street. The GLA's report on the public consultation, published in June 2025, showed Londoners and businesses back the Mayor’s ideas. Almost seven in 10 expressed support for the Mayor’s proposed interventions to regenerate Oxford Street, while two-thirds were supportive of the pedestrianisation idea specifically. [1]

It includes a public consultation on proposals to pedestrianise the main shopping thoroughfare on Oxford Street which would improve visitor experience and better enable new leisure offers, such as al fresco dining and outdoor events. The Mayor has been clear that Oxford Street is an area of critical national economic importance, with an estimated annual contribution of £25bn to London’s economy – but it has suffered over many years for a variety of reasons, from the pandemic to the growth of online shopping and retail parks. [2]

Now, Sadiq is progressing with steps to establish a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) dedicated to regenerating the area and ultimately making Oxford Street a world-leading urban space for shopping, leisure and outdoor events. Following support from the London Assembly in July 2025, the Mayor is working with Government to make the necessary legislation for the MDC to be established by 1 January 2026.

Major businesses in the Oxford Street area and across the capital have also welcomed the plans, which aim to boost retail and drive growth for London and the wider UK economy. Detailed traffic and highway proposals are being developed to pedestrianise the section of road between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus up to Great Portland Street – almost a mile of one of London’s most iconic high streets. These will be consulted on later this year.

The event on Sunday, 21st September will offer something for everyone, including:

  • This is Style – a celebration of Oxford Street’s global fashion and retail identity, with branded activations, pop-ups, and unique photo opportunities.
  • This is Play – celebrating London as a global sporting capital with activities and showcases from international partners like Major League Baseball.
  • This is Flavour – food and drink stalls, coffee pop-ups and bars, offering a taste of the West End’s dining scene.
  • This is Sound – live music and performances, from headline acts on the main stage to acoustic corners, DJs, and secret sets.
  • This is Love – charity and community-led zone including a showcase led by Choose Love and featuring a wellness village hosted by Holland and Barrett.
  • This is History – honouring Oxford Street’s rich heritage through photography and storytelling.
  • This is Future – giving Londoners a glimpse of the Mayor’s plans to transform Oxford Street into a greener, cleaner, pedestrian-friendly destination.
  • This is Me – interactive selfie spots and experiences to capture the excitement of the day.

Further details about the event and partners will be announced in the coming weeks, with City Hall working in close partnership with shops and venues on Oxford Street such as Holland & Barrett who will be curating a wellness zone. Other confirmed partners for the event include charitable non-profit organisation Choose Love, who support refugees and displaced people with everything from search and rescue to food and legal advice. On the day of the event, a number of Oxford Street stores will be offering bespoke offers and deals.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m excited to announce our landmark ‘This is Oxford Street’ event which will take place in September and offer Londoners, visitors, and businesses a glimpse of what the nation’s high street could look like in the future.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to see Oxford Street in a whole new light, traffic-free, full of music, great food, pop-ups and entertainment for everyone. As Mayor, I’m determined to unlock Oxford Street’s true potential and deliver a world-class, accessible, clean, avenue.

“So add the date to your diary, it’s going to be a fantastic day out as we reimagine the West End for everyone. This Is Oxford Street – vibrant, thriving and back on the map.”

Zoe Elliot, Director of Partnerships at Choose Love, said: “We are delighted to be a part of ‘This is Oxford Street’ this September. Choose Love was started by a group of Londoners who wanted to show support for displaced people globally and we have always felt at home in Central London which is where we’ve been lucky to have our annual pop-up shop for the past six years. We are so grateful to get to pop up at this exciting event and raise much-needed funds. We will be selling beautiful limited edition merchandise and offering the opportunity for shoppers to buy vital supplies for refugees and displaced people. 100% of profits will help ensure we can deliver nutritious food, essential services for babies, education for children, safe shelter and much more, across 36 countries.”

Emma Strain, Director of Customer at Transport for London, said: “Oxford Street is an iconic location and this event will be like nothing the West End has ever seen. Served by a number of Tube lines, the Elizabeth line and local bus services, customers will be able to visit and experience a traffic-free Oxford Street and the range of live music, food markets and pop-up events with well-known brands taking place throughout the day.”

Karim Fatehi OBE, Chief Executive at London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “The plans to revitalise Oxford Street are a bold and exciting step towards re-energising London’s West End, improving the area, increasing footfall for local businesses, and boosting the city’s international reputation. We welcome the commitment to work with local businesses and residents to address logistical challenges and ensure the economic benefits are shared by everyone.”

Dee Corsi, Chief Executive at New West End Company, said: “It is exciting to see Oxford Street animated in this way, giving Londoners and visitors the chance to experience the street differently. We are working with our members, Westminster City Council, the Mayor of London and the wider West End community to ensure the day showcases the breadth and diversity of what Oxford Street has to offer.”

Some bus routes in the area will be operating differently from around 21:00 on Saturday 20th September and until around 04:00 on Monday 22nd September. People travelling to the event are advised to check before they travel using the free TfL Go app to plan their journey via the Tube, Elizabeth line and local bus services, as well as by Santander Cycles, which have a number of docking stations in the surrounding area. In June 2025, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced he will move ahead with bold proposals to pedestrianise Oxford Street and revitalise the area following overwhelming public and business support for his proposals. Between 28 February and 2 May 2025, the Greater London Authority (GLA) consulted Londoners on two questions related to Oxford Street: the designation of a Mayoral Development Area (MDA) and the principle of pedestrianising Oxford Street. The consultation was widely publicised to statutory consultees, local stakeholders, Londoners and other interested parties throughout this period.
The consultation received 6,642 submissions from a wide range of respondents across Greater London and beyond. These included statutory consultees, individuals, residents' associations, businesses, trade unions, trade bodies, active travel groups, and accessibility organisations.

On the question of designating an MDA, 69 per cent supported the proposal, of those who responded on this topic. On the principle of pedestrianisation, 66 per cent of those who responded on this topic were in support. This does not include those who responded with boilerplate text through campaigns. If all campaigns are included, the MDC support rises to 70 per cent and the pedestrianisation support rises to 67 per cent.

The Mayor is progressing with steps to establish a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) dedicated to regenerating the area and ultimately making Oxford Street a world-leading urban space for shopping, leisure and outdoor events. Following support from the London Assembly in July 2025, the Mayor is working with Government to make the necessary legislation for the MDC to be established by 1 January 2026.

The MDC will work alongside government, businesses, local councils and local residents to develop and deliver a bold new vision for London’s flagship high street. The Mayor’s proposals include:

  • creating a beautiful pedestrian-friendly public space to attract shoppers, which can host exciting events and activities to make Oxford Street a place for all;
  • creating a well-designed, high-quality space that showcases the best of London's talent, assets and opportunities – a place that Londoners feel proud of and those coming to London want to visit, invest in and return to;
  • hosting exciting events to showcase and test the potential of a new and more inviting public space.

These proposals aim to attract more national and international visitors, bringing the world to London and showcasing the best of London to the world. This will also help drive progress on the recently published London Growth Plan by acting as a magnet for new customers, new investment and new jobs for decades to come.
