On Thursday 4th May, The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Chair of the London Assembly, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, hosted a special event at City Hall to mark the historic occasion of the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

This event paid tribute to Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla with speeches and reflections of hope from the Mayor, Dr Onkar Sahota, Chair of the London Assembly, Mary Harpley, Chief Officer of the Greater London Authority (GLA), faith leaders and young people from charities under the King’s patronage.

Col Jane Davis OBE QVRM TD DL, His Majesty's Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, attended as the King’s representative.

The event brought together representatives from the GLA Group, including the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade and Transport for London alongside London Assembly members, civic leaders, Trade Unions, local authority mayors to commemorate and celebrate the Coronation.

Guests enjoyed contributions from the new King’s supported charities, #iwill and Youth United Foundation, and the Soul Sanctuary Choir performed a selection of joyful, celebrational songs.

City Hall raised the Coronation flag in honour of Their Majesties, and this will fly until 12 May.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “On behalf of all Londoners, I would like to congratulate Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla as they celebrate their Coronation.

“I’m incredibly excited that the eyes of the world are on London once again as Their Majesties are crowned, showing our capital city in all of its glory.

“I have every confidence our new King and Queen will follow the golden example set by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as they forge ahead with this momentous responsibility. I’m truly proud to have a monarchy that forms such a rich part of our cultural tapestry and can’t wait to celebrate this historic occasion.”

Chair of the London Assembly, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, said: “As elected representatives of the people of London, the London Assembly offers our warmest wishes to His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the joyous occasion of their Coronation.

“His Majesty has always championed the traditions and values shared by many Londoners and I have no doubt that he will reign with this same commitment.

“The first Coronation in many of our lifetimes is a moment to reflect on our history and the unwavering dedication of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who I know still holds an important place in the hearts of many Londoners.

“From ceremonial processions to a flypast spectacle, this is also a time to look to the future. Our great city will be in the spotlight this weekend and I welcome those who are coming from far and wide to celebrate the Coronation with us.

“With the final preparations now underway, I also want to thank our emergency services and all of those working so hard behind the scenes to ensure that everyone can enjoy this historic moment.

“God Save the King, happy and glorious, long may he reign.”
