During yesterday’s Mayor’s Question Time (MQT) , Caroline Russell AM challenged the Mayor on progress toward reducing car vehicle kilometres on London’s roads by 27 per cent by 2030. This reduction in traffic is needed for the Mayor to meet his targets as outlined the in his own Net Zero pathway. [1]
During the exchange, the Mayor acknowledged for the first time that London is not on course to meet this target, stating: “On the trajectory since the pandemic, we’re not on track.” He went on to say that he’s confident that with a “good business plan and the cooperation of councils, we can get back on track.” [2]
Caroline pushed the Mayor to reaffirm his commitment to the 27 per cent traffic reduction target, and he confirmed that target remains in place.
In response to the Mayor’s admission, Green Party London Assembly Member Caroline Russell, said:
“I’ve been pushing the Mayor on this since he was re-elected in May last year. He has finally admitted that he is not on track to meet the traffic reduction needed to achieve Net Zero by 2030. This isn’t just about data and targets, it’s about urgent London-wide action to give all Londoners safe, convenient and accessible alternatives to using a car.”
