Your request
I would like to know how many trees have been planted in London by the GLA & Mayor's Office each year since 2017 to as close to the present year as possible.
Our response
While the GLA does not directly implement tree planting schemes (i.e. it is a strategic rather than local authority and does not directly arrange or manage any planting), the Mayor has funded a range of tree planting programmes since taking office in 2016. The details of these are below. As the tree planting season runs between November – March the number of trees planted is reported across two calendar years. Confirmed numbers for 2022-23 will be available after the end of the 2022-23 planting season (April 2023).
The GLA is also a partner in the London Urban Forest Plan Delivery projects, funded by Defra’s Trees Call to Action Fund, which will see approximately 38,000 additional trees planted in 2022-23 by partners.
Further to the tree planting detailed below, the Mayor also supports tree planting via Transport for London (TfL). Either directly, via TfL planting along the Transport for London Route Network (TLRN), or indirectly via TfL funding to boroughs for their Local Implementation Plans (LIP). As such, the total tree number below will not match other published totals, where the trees planted via these other approaches are included. For information about the trees planted by TfL, you should contact TfL’s information access team using [email protected]. Policy G7 of the Mayor’s London Plan also states that in their Development Plans, boroughs should identify opportunities for tree planting in strategic locations. Many local authorities will monitor their tree planting, but the GLA does not hold borough data. For information on borough planting you should contact each borough.
