FAQ - UNESCO Day for Remembering the Transatlantic Slave Trade

This is the FAQ page for UNESCO Day for Remembering the Transatlantic Slave Trade & Abolition 2021 event.

Further objectives are to mark many of our communities' contributions to life in London and the UK. We must learn lessons from the past in order not to repeat them in the future. The event provides a space where Londoners can reflect on the injustices of human traffickers whilst at the same time learning and celebrating the people who led the resistance movements from the 1500’s, to the human rights movements in the present day.

Over 500 years later the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 highlight the lasting legacy and impact of this period of British history. Mayoral events such as this help promote community cohesion by fostering an understanding of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its lasting effects, whilst simultaneously fostering understanding of respective cultures, values, and histories that are imperative to counter racist attitudes. Human traffickers and the human rights movements included all sorts of people.

This International Day is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. In accordance with the goals of the intercultural project "The Slave Route", it should offer an opportunity for collective consideration of the historic causes, the methods and the consequences of this tragedy, and for an analysis of the interactions to which it has given rise between Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean. Read about the history of this event and a message from the Director-General of UNESCO.

Having the event online enables viewers to participate remotely and safely for this year.

You can watch online without registering, as it will also be live-streamed on the Mayors channel.

You can ask questions that are relevant to the keynote discussion. We request that you;

  • Stay on topic
