In response to HM Inspector of Constabulary Lee Freeman’s assessment of the Metropolitan Police Service, Susan Hall AM, Chairman of the Police and Crime Committee, said:
"The findings of this inspection are concerning, and highlight several key areas that require immediate improvement.
“Out of eight graded areas, the Metropolitan Police was graded as "requires improvement" or "inadequate" in seven. The grading of investigating crime and managing offenders as “inadequate” will be particularly worrying for Londoners. This shows the sheer scale of the issues facing the Met Police, and how much work is left to do.
"As London’s Police and Crime Commissioner, the Mayor must play his part in ensuring the Met overcomes these issues, regains public confidence, and delivers on its responsibilities to keep Londoners safe.
“The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee has been scrutinising these issues for a number of years. It will now examine how the Met and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) will work together to deliver the improvements outlined in the inspection. The Committee will question the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime and a representative of the Metropolitan Police in September, where it will consider these findings in more detail on behalf of Londoners.”
