Building on her September 2023 London Loo League Table Report, today Caroline Russell AM questioned London’s Mayor on the significant delays in repairing toilets along the Transport for London (TfL) network.
Caroline’s question focused specifically on a prolonged toilet closure at Vauxhall station. The third-busiest rail station in London with 140,000 people arriving each day, a constituent voiced concern to Caroline over the fact that Vauxhall’s primary toilet has been shut since the coronavirus pandemic. Given Vauxhall’s proximity to the tube network’s biggest ‘loo deserts’ and its status as a step-free station, Caroline pushed the Mayor to confirm whether his office had a concrete timeline for reopening the toilet. [2]
Additionally, Caroline pressed the Mayor to verify whether funding for TfL’s comprehensive toilet plan can be expected in his upcoming budget.
Green Group Assembly Member Caroline Russell said:
“Toilets are essential for public health, toilets are essential for accessibility, and toilets are essential to the basic functioning of this marvellous city.
“Londoners deserve dignified, public places to relieve themselves. The Mayor has the power, and frankly the duty, to step up and ensure existing toilets are open for use, and begin a serious investment in building new toilets across the transport network.”
