What will I be doing?

  • To provide practical gardening assistance and support to older householders, in order to help them maintain their independence and remain safe, secure, comfortable and happy in their own home. Our hope is that the scheme will help build links between local residents.
  • The role could include:. agreeing what gardening tasks need to be carried out. carrying out the task or referring it staff where appropriate. improving garden security through trimming and planting. clearing up following any gardening tasks. exercising good practice and assisting with green waste collection arrangements where possible.
  • We will match you with a person local to you, who will provide the required gardening tools.

What impact will this have?

  • The volunteers will support older householders, in order to help them maintain their independence and remain safe, secure, comfortable and happy in their own home.
  • The volunteer's gardening support will help an older person to increase their use of the garden and enjoy the green space and outdoors, increasing their well-being.
  • By providing regular monthly visits the volunteer will contribute to tackling issues like isolation and loneliness in older people.

Commitment

  • Usually you would need to commit around 1-2 hours on a monthly basis .

What else do I need to know?

  • You will be required to supply two references, one being your current or most recent employer.

Expenses

  • We reimburse reasonable travel expenses and if you volunteer for more than 4 hours we will reimburse £5 towards lunch expenses too.

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required

Training

  • No formal training is required although gardening experience will be necessary in order to volunteer independently. We would provide you with all the required information and offer Volunteer Induction training and volunteer guidelines.
