Big events have the power to bring communities together. Think of religious or cultural celebrations like Christmas, St George’s Day, Diwali, Eid, St Patrick’s Day, Lunar New Year, Vaisakhi, Black History Month, Chanukah, Pride and UK Black Pride.
This event aims to showcase Black creativity in the capital and offers a platform to new and established Black artists. Called 'Black on the Square', the first event will take place on 2 September 2023.
We’d like to know your best ideas and suggestions for this afternoon of celebration.
Please tell us:
- What you would like to see or do at an annual event celebrating Black culture in London
- Which creatives, artists or organisations would you like to see represented
- What do you think City Hall could do to support Black creativity and culture in London in 2023 and beyond

I think this is another waste of money.
Who ever you are and from where ever you came...all have a story.
Not every thing is about promoting individuals and their social impact , from positive to negative.
Lets have a celebration of common since
Lets have unity not separation .
Lets just be normal and non flamboyant ,just somethings should be private . Celebrate family orientated free fun for all.
More topical ,explosive and sexual topics be held with care.
It does seem that all this promotion of gender and choice , is making, some people very rich..
Maybe think is this exception, pandering or just a laugh behind backs.

As a black Londoner I think this would be a waste of time.
Trafalgar Sq is a tourist area -maybe hold smaller, rolling events in areas where there are already high concentrations of black people.
Londoners are really feeling the pinch at the moment -ordinary people are struggling to afford basic necessities so such a large-scale event would be in poor taste.
It could also stir up existing resentment / be over-policed.
The 'black community' isn't really that -black people are very diverse in the same way an English person is quite different to a Danish person.
Such an event could end up ignoring this fact so please do your research in advance.
Either way, 'art' showcased shouldn't be limited to modern music. It could be an opportunity to showcase more traditional art forms and opening the eyes of young people to the varied opportunities available to them as well promoting early-career artists.

A weekly "Quiet Day" with two development-free sites per Borough

Creativity and humanity works best if London had one weekly "quiet day":
A day where there is no road noise, no construction noise, no light pollution, no intrusion.
Mr Mayor: Please set aside two sites per Borough where no development takes place and nature can reign:
In conjunction with the "quiet day" this can allow cultures and ideas to thrive.
We are fed up with the constant building and traffic noise.

Award black academics like Afua Hirsch, Paul Gilroy and Robert Beckford etc, who have consulted on, inspired or contributed to creative film, television or other creative outlets. The award could be light-heartedly called, “Thank you for your brainpower.”

Storytelling-athon - Black British authors tell short stories

Get Black British authors to tell short stories back to back. The Royal Literary Fund would be a good place to connect with Black British authors who could come together to tell stories continuously. This could be an in person and online event so people can tune in and listen to their stories. There stories could also be recorded so people can listen back to them and a schedule released beforehand so people can select when they want to join the event in person.

Present a range of inspiring opportunities for young people to engage in. This could be time spent with a zoologist, equestrian, film television or radio production experience, voice-over artists, theatre, ballet or orchestra for example. Not every young person will get an opportunity, but a selection could be offered for the young person to choose from in a lucky draw.

We all know knife 🔪 crime is very bad in London. How do we stop it. If there was a answer, it would be stop. The thing is knife crime can't not be stop. But can be reduced.
The police can't stop it. Even family 👪 won't be able to stop it. Because they don't know how to stop it women are walking home at night and day. Are being chase. Where can you run. Not the phone box.
Boy is being chase by a couple of boys with knife. Where can he 🏃♂️ run. Mum and dad think carefully about your kids. There is a way to stop that happening to love one. I have worked with a designer company.
To find out how to keep people safe. Its up to you. If you don't listen more love one will be murder in London. As a black man. I believe my way is the way. Park and high street needs it.

I am reading an excellent book, Black Tommies by Ray Costello (Liverpool University Press) which I borrowed from Eltham Library. Itis also very important to read work by Malorie Blackman, Toni Morrison, Harriet Beecher Stowe and similar authors. David Olusoga's work is also very important.

In light of the current financial situation I think it's incomprehensible that the mayor would consider wasting money on events such as these.

Regard blacks and whites as equals

Why do you seem to put down white people, do you not think that if you do organise an event it's wrong to do it for blacks only what is your dislike of white people, when you organise your homosexuals marches you do not stipulate for blacks only do you, so why do you wish to do do in this event, when we voted for you as the fool's we are we did so on the assumption you were a human being not anything to do with you heritage or colour you should not judge people on their colour or race,
Try using our money to help those in need like the homeless regardless of their colour instead of pushing your own agenda.

This seems like a very divisive event focused on one minority. There would be uproar if there was an event focused on white culture. Why not hold an event that includes all cultures.

Why can’t it be similar to the recent jubilee celebrations where everyone was included and the nation celebrated together, black, white, Asian, let’s bring London together and not divide.

Events like this shouldn't be run by the Mayor. It always smacks of electioneering. I think the Mayor and relevant council should facilitate but not be explicitly branding cultural events. . Why must everything be divided? Lambeth County Fair is a great example of a culturally diverse event. Less encouragement of hiving off people into different groups please, and less trying black people as a cultural monolith, its limiting.

Stop this racism

Ethnic groups in London:
- "Asian, or Asian British" ethnic groups 9.6% (5.4 million)
- "Black, Black British, Caribbean or African" 4.2% (2.4 million)
- "Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups" 3.0% (1.7 million)
- "Other ethnic groups" 2.2% (1.2 million)
Why do we need to celebrate only Black culture and creativity in London?
Why are you so interested in excluding people in London an in UK in general?
This is racism

Rolling Cultural Programme

Last activity 1 year ago
Let's have a rolling programme of months devoted to different cultural and religious groups, with a focus in Trafalgar Square? Isn't our world view as Londoners still too restricted? As a 1960's born, White Englishman, I want to continue to embrace and learn from people who have different life experiences / cultural or religious backgrounds... A REGULAR PROGRAME of events every month would encourage awareness across London by being truly inclusive and encouraging different religions and culture to show a wider audience who they are... Understanding leads to acceptance in my view, and I would welcome the chance to support any events that are aimed at bringing people together. If I knew on, say the first Saturday of every month, something would be on in the Square, I would make an effort to go whatever the culture or religion featured.

Why are you segregating black culture from white? It just emphasises a divide and maintains black with black and white with white. The scheme should encourage different cultures to work together to create marvellous things.

A big thank you to everyone who shared their ideas here on Talk London.
In the run-up to the event on Trafalgar Square, our City Hall teams had monthly meetings with a community advisory board. Your suggestions were brought to these meetings and were carried out where possible. They told us they all found this support from Londoners amazing.
Thank you very much for taking the time to send in suggestions and questions for the new mayoral flagship event Black on the square. The event was very successful.
The beautiful sunny day saw over 15,000 attendees enjoying great food, lovely music and interactive stalls.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan was serving the community behind catering stalls, bookshops and community-led organisations.
