Reducing violent crime
We'd like your views on the new Violence Reduction Unit and what Londoners can do to help prevent violence.
Together with the Met Police and specialists in health, youth services and local government, City Hall has announced plans to establish a new Violence Reduction Unit. It aims to tackle the causes of violent crime, such as poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities. Alongside this, the Violent Crime Taskforce will continue its work to take knives and other weapons off the streets.
What do you think of the measures above? Do you think that it is important to bring together different services and involve communities when designing solutions to tackle violent crime? What can Londoners, families and communities do to help prevent violence?

And I feel like there needs to be some kind of job that youngsters can do to prevent them to going into selling drugs etc. Even to find jobs for youths it's extremely difficult and I think something must be done to make it easier for them to get jobs and this could help prevent many of them leading to the wrong path.

Show full commentI think that including people with mental ill health is definetely something that needs to be worked on, however these people including myself, especially those who have received violent crime towards themselves, need to be listened to with respect and justice needs to be done to the perpetrators, both of what leads up to the violent crime, and the perpetratros of the violent crime itself. I personally worked very hard to get where i am in life, and it doesnt help when other people from english religious organisations still carry on trying to ruin my life, because i once thought that these places were full of good people.
Also id like to point out that many people are born into fortune, which i myself am trying to also be in respectful earnt money in what i want to do in life (Djing/Acting/{Politics), but they dont seem to realise that with money comes responsibilty, and if they abuse that responsibilty then they are in my opinion, breaking the law like thugs.
So if people arnt happy about my cause to this world and trying to bring a smile to peoples faces, i do think they should be tought that what they are doing is not ok.
But hey, who am I to say anything.

Deploying this tech will also be a concrete indication that London is serious about keeping both it's citizens and visitors safe. Check out the safe-citizens.com website - I cannot post a link, but its really easy to find.

Personally I'd be happy for police to have the ability to stop and search for knives and weapons. Stationary metal detectors need to be installed at 'hotspots' and hand held ones used on the streets.
Ban the sale of knives on the Internet. Can't believe that still has not happened.

Show full commentAs there are often just single parent households with the parent a teenager with no support network, one step towards reducing children going into gangs and crime is to a) have better sex education to stop early pregnancy, b) teaching kids compassion from toddler age. Once they are in school it may already be too late. Of course - more police, government support for those in poverty or people working and having to rely on food banks - all this is really shameful. The government has a lot to answer for, but children having children is not great either.

Single parents (usually mothers) are not the reason regardless of age. Maybe absent fathers are? Sex education is not the issue either. The issue is exclusion from schooling, poverty and a total lack of resources for these kids and the parent. Especially now in the summer holidays. Some of these young 'gang members' don't even eat regularly especially when there's only 1 parent at home. I do agree that poverty plays a massive role in all this.

Trust in authority is at an all-time low but we must all ask ourselves are we really doing all we can to make our children have respect for the police and local government, and can the same be said by the police and authorities? Do we respect for the place that we live. Not everything can be done by others.

2. There needs to be improved technology both for the officers on the street, control rooms and offices to allow faster sharing of information and intelligence between Boroughs.
3. Increased and improved stop and search to enforce the removing of weapons and those carrying weapons from the streets.
4. CJS and courts to enforce sentencing against those caught carrying knives and dangerous weapons.

It is a long running joke that the police have their hands tied because of the “softly, softly” approach to crime and punishment in this country. I love that we are a tolerant society. But everyone knows that this tolerance is being abused - none more so than the abusers themselves. Those individuals and gangs with a hateful, destructive agenda are clued up to the rules and know that the police can't touch them given certain circumstances.
It’s time for change.
Give the police the power to enforce the rule of law with less restrictions. Remove the red tape. Police should absolutely be accountable but they must be empowered - especially at a time when budgets are below what is needed. Given that there is less money and therefore less police, at least then give them the resources and means to act effectively.
The people “upstairs” will argue that zero tolerance is blunt instrument and innocents may be caught up in any action taken. This is true but UK police forces have always acted on reliable intelligence to reduce such risks. Dealing with knife users and carriers swiftly and harshly will make those that would think twice.
I am not a hardliner and I do want us to become a draconian state. But I do not want to live in fear and I do not want any more blood on our streets. I believe investing in our youth and creating opportunities for them is the long term solution to this problem. However, until such time that government can see the wisdom in this, our short term goal must be to come down hard on crime.

It is all too easy to cherry-pick papers that give the view you want them to. It does not look like proper review of the evidence. It is also rather simplistic in its approach. And the UK does not have the same culture as the US.

They is a conscious bias of labour councils duplicating the actions of Colonisers by enabling hipsters , of a specific demography to aquire land and all the funding in particular localities.
These localities have high poverty indinces, moreover the hipsters are able to build empires for self and friends on the lucrative funding aquired. Its no accident that Lambeth and Southwark have JP Morgan Funded cic who have no expertise in running businesess. Yet they are enabled to aquire high salaries manage /oppress local residents then,... have the audacity to have local residents to volunteer for them ( slavery) . The political parties are one and the same .People need to unify over a number of issues and resisit the smnowballing exploitation. The same at the mayors office , all graduates getting their MA paid for by money aquired from the EU companies set up for them.Although their parents can afford this they are given a free ride. Not forgetting no work is being done. For all the finance going out what is actually working . Crime doubled, unemployment blah blah bla. Spend 2 hours in city hall and what does one observe .A specific demograh being enriched with city hall resources.

My family wishes to formerly apologize to the very well organized and kind Mayor of London, Mr Sadiq Khan, who was a good host for us in that his work helped provide a safe, fun and memorable experience for us, and we are truly grateful to the people of London who made an excelent choice in electing Mr Khan.
I wish each Londoner could come back to America and help us vote out Trump, but then Americans are gulible with believing the college electoral vote is not manipulated by Russian hackers, so sadly USA has a fascist dictator today who is an extreme embarassment, and dangerous at that.
If I'm to be expelled from my country for posting this message, may I please apply for citizenship in London, because I would be most happy in your lovely city which is full of intelligent and kind citizens.
Respectfully,

Show full commentI have friends who live all over London including Belgravia, I can tell you that crime there is seriously prevalent , stabbings, motor bike raids, watch stealing.. It is not just us paupers who are being ignored! My son was mugged yesterday in broad daylight, they stole their money and then threatened to... and that was on Baker Street... One of his friends has been mugged 7 times, they don’t tell anyone for fear of being on lock down. Also they don’t believe in the system. My son was telling me good kids are now ‘tooling up’, as an adult we know this attitude is catastrophic, but they are just kids! They don’t believe there is help, they are scared and already feel let down. They don’t believe in politicians, police, authority, nothing. With such a disillusioned attitude, it is no surprise they are turning to crime.
I love London, born and bread, and proud of our multicultural, fun, hugely diverse city, but I am thinking it might be better to leave. All this money spent on hideously ugly buildings might be better spent on trying to avoid a lawless society, where these buildings will be useless. We need to educate families that this isn’t acceptable, and help those that are struggling. Parental responsibility is a huge factor. Yes we need more police on the streets, but we also need to quell the storm before it erupts. I want freedom and joy for both me and my kids, not lock down and fear! I will get involved and help tackle this anyway we can.. If the system lets us down, let’s stop moaning and getting angry, let’s become the system...? I have just been told my writing contained bad language, I was quoting what the muggers said!!! Really, is this what we have become.. Pathetic!!!

London is a mess, our beautiful city is becoming a refuge for greed and self servers. Show full commentHaving read a dozen or so of the previous comments at random, find most of them make sense, however all of the proposed solutions would take many years to achieve a substantial reduction in the murder rate, whereas a reversal of the huge cuts in police numbers (on the streets, not at desks) would have a very much faster effect. One doesn't have to be a genius to reach this conclusion, the police now have to deal with crimes that barely existed or didn't exist at all years ago, e.g religious terrorism, computer crime, stalking etc.
It's stating the bleeding obvious that more crime, thousands fewer policemen, mass police station closures, is not a recipe for success. One has to wonder if governement really cares one way or the other, they seem happy to fiddle while Rome burns, many people wouldn't even bother to report car crime, break ins, even assaults as they know it would be waste of time, all the police would do is provide a crime number.
And if none of the above isn't depressing enough, add some of the ludicrous sentences handed down by the courts.
