Added by Talk London

Imagine you’re out and about and need to use the toilet.

  • What factors do you consider when deciding whether or not to use a public toilet?
  • What would you need to see or hear in order for you to feel comfortable using a public toilet?

Have you come across any particularly good public toilets in London or elsewhere? What did you like about them?

Tell us more in the discussion below.

I would be happy to pay a small charge eg 20p to use one, gates could be installed with a card reader like in some park toilets. This would help towards cost a little.
Lots of cafés have toilets but I can understand they are frustrated with people using the toilet without buying anything.

That they are clean and well-lit with a functioning LOCK

My weakness is I have a weak bladder and a nervous system that accentuates this. The availability of a public toilet is very important to me. I have been caught short on several occasions.

Also Public Houses can be used -to 11pm and some shopping centres - to 9 pm. At my age of 80 I am advised to drink more water,If I time this right I may get home before needing to urinate,so I do carry 330ml bottle just in case !

How clean they are and whether there is toilet roll, soap and a way to dry my hands. It's also important there are no gaps under cubicle doors or walls so nothing can come in or be taken out while I'm using the toilet

I end up going in a coffee shop buying a coffee so that I can use their toilet

Toilet should be clean with hand washing facilities and paper. All stations should have a toilet open as long as the station

There seem to be fewer and fewer free public toilets in London. Men with prostate issues, and women with other conditions are often very distressed at not being able to locate a public toilet. Other countries put us to shame on this issue.

People in other countries are more respectful of public infrastructure though. Eg in Japan there are public toilets everywhere and people keep them clean and tidy. Here, they get trashed in a short space of time by members of the public.

Public toilets need to be in all towns, open 24/7. If they are not, people will urinate behind walls & bushes, which I see frequently.

The best London public toilets are in in Coal Yards drop.

unless it's absolutely beyond disgusting I will always use a toilet if I need to go. The issue is availability. In victorian times there were public toilets everywhere, now these are relics or being turned into bars. Bring them back & make them accessible. They're so vital to inclusion for people with medical conditions. Security, blue lights etc. can be used to discourage drug users. (Or like maybe we could create safe alternative spaces for drug users to go? But that's another topic)

ArtG says it all (4 days ago). That is a superb summary of the situation. plus: There used to be many more public conveniences in London, but they were not abused as they are now. It's understandable that no-one wants the job of attendant...

I accept in the past they attracted certain types of people that put people off from using them, but we need to rethink how we can make this work, we need staffed, clean public toilets, perhaps not hidden away so to deter people loitering and not charge to use!!
