Public toilets in London

Added by Talk London

Imagine you’re out and about and need to use the toilet.

  • What factors do you consider when deciding whether or not to use a public toilet?
  • What would you need to see or hear in order for you to feel comfortable using a public toilet?

Have you come across any particularly good public toilets in London or elsewhere? What did you like about them?

Tell us more in the discussion below.

The toilets on Hackney Downs are pretty good. They are well maintained, and kept clean, close to a park keepers office - however open only during daytime. The steel internal design of the toilets a bit like airplane toilet mean that can be kept cleaner, sharps slot for addicts to dispose of their syringes safely if they are making use of the toilet reduces risk for other members of public.

I answered the survey honestly, and as a fit and healtthy person, my answers will indicate no particular need for public toilets. However, several members of my family (who do not wish to take part in this survey) do need public toilets and the places they visit are affected by the lack of toilets. We do need more public toilets and they do need to be clean and hygenic and, as noted by others here, if they are used by homeless people, then it is even more important that they be clean hygenic and pleasant to use.

I don't understand how being fit and healthy avoids the need for public toilets. Even fit and healthy people need to go!

There are many limitations on public toilets and cost is one of them as wages need to be paid to the operatives as well as the utilities used. I think the cost of going to the toilet in public conveniences is high, some as much as 50p make it an issue in the ever expensive society we live in. It’s no longer spending a penny but nearly half a pound which puts it out of reach for many.

I do look for other places that have good facilities like stores, pubs and cafes on a regular basis and keep them in mind when visiting an area. Being a man of a certain age when I need the toilet it’s usually quickly. Knowing where to go quickly with confidence becomes a problem after the above close as there is nowhere to go. Having worked late and night shifts up until recently there is absolutely nowhere to go which is totally acceptable.

Regarding the cost, a penny in Victorian times was equivalent to much more than 50p today

All public toilets should be manned to be kept clean, and they should all be free to use.

Stop closing toilets! Keep the ones that are open, open!

Unfortunately, the old public toilets in Beckenham High Street were closed sometime ago. They used to be fairly well maintained. Instead, the public are allowed to use toilets in certain cafes and restaurants. However, they should not have to. Now, the old public toilets are being converted into yet another cafe which Beckenham does not need. The old toilet block should have been kept open, but as with many other things now, it's all about money and saving costs, rather than public services.

No public'y provided public toilets.
Due to the government central funds to councils being drastically cut , councils have been forced to cut back on all services and especially "non essential" services. The provision of public toilets should therefore be made mandatory and supported with funding.
They should then be easily accessible, in busy areas, well lit and maintained ,open, clean and free.
It is worth noticing that on a visit to Winchester there were numerous spotless public toilets

I would use it if it's clean, well maintained and in a well lit area

I would use a public toilet only if I were fairly desperate for the facility! There are plenty of places which are open to the public which have their own facilities - restaurant, cafe, theatre, museum, church etc, so if I'm going to one of those I wouldn't need a public toiler. I appreciate that this isn't the case for everyone, particularly anyone with children or a dependent or disabled older person.

If public toilets are to exist at all there MUST be arrangements to keep them clean and secure, in my view.

It should be the mark of a civilised urban society to provide clean, free toilets. Use all the money tourists bring in and invest in the worlds best toilets. Maintain them, staff them and build them to last. The Victorians put our current politicians and councils to shame. There are a million places to eat and drink and nowhere to to go to the toilet. I'd happily pay a few pence more on my council tax if it went toward decent, clean toilets. Come on! Don't make me pay to use it, I've already paid for the food and drink, so get some financial support from the shops that profit from selling the food and drink. A basic human need that goes unspoken and ignored. It's. been getting steadily worse since I was a kid. Finish the survey and then DO SOMETHING!

Also encourage businesses (such as John Lewis-type entities as well as cafes and restaurants) to allow people to use their facilities where possible.

lousy survey. Central London and suburbs have no toilets and few that were there have been hchcnaged into boutiques, etc. I am 83 and find it v. difficult to travel comfortably around London. My late husband had a health condition and could not travel because there were insufficient toilets. Local high street is a nonsense question as if it is local one is near home and one's own toilet. Poor Macdonalds, pubs, and occasional restaurant have to be used and this is emarassing. How tourists manage I have no idea.I have a disability key but now it is often a number to key in.

I have been writing to TFL without success to reopen the toilets within Walthamstow Central Bus Station that were closed during covid. The response back to my emails is that the male, female and disabled toilets have been closed for staff use with a pin code lock on the door. This is totally unacceptable for a space that is used by thousands of people a day and it is a major inconvenience for many. If anyone here can help get these reopened it would be greatly appreciated.

Often find toilets are closed early, contrary to times given on council website (e.g Westminster) - wrong info worse than no info.

I do not object to the charge and this works quite well if you remember to bring your card. For me to use facilities at night , they would need to be in a bright, public area preferably not multi cubicle.

Toilets in the park are quite good.
