Ask the Mayor and the Members of the London Assembly about transport

User Image for
Added by Talk London

This is your chance to put your question to the Mayor, Sadiq Khan and Members of the London Assembly about their current plans, priorities and policies for the capital, at the first ever People’s Question Time Online, on 12 November 2020, 7pm - 9pm.

The Mayor is responsible for

  • ensuring our public transport network runs safely and reliably
  • enabling more Londoners to walk and cycle by improving streets and reducing road danger
  • greening transport by reducing traffic and vehicle pollution and increasing use of renewable energy on the network
  • unlocking growth and improving connectivity, putting walking, cycling and public transport at the heart of new developments
  • making transport affordable and accessible for more people

The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body that holds the Mayor to account and investigates issues that matter to Londoners.

What would you ask them about transport?

Please keep your question short, relevant and constructive.  If another member has already asked a similar question to the one you were going to ask, you can show your support by commenting on that question.

You can submit your question until midnight on Sunday 1 November. Read more about the shortlist process in the FAQs

The discussion ran from 05 October 2020 - 02 November 2020

It is important that there are 20mph limits in place for residential areas and near schools. However I do not understand the purpose of having main thoroughfares reduced their speed limits. Very few drivers adhere to the reduced speed and it creates frustration for many drivers. When I spoke with the transport officer at my borough he said the changes were made to be in line with the Mayor of London and that is supposed to bring about a change... well it hasn't.  Some sense of reality concerning road traffic would be more welcomed.

We've seen how this Government have treated with utter contempt, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and its people.

There are now reports that they will be targeting London next with threats of Mr Schnapps taking over and imposing an extended congestion charging zone, increase in council tax, raising fares, etc...

It is quite ironic that Mr Johnson is looking to impose this when he removed the extension in order to gain votes. It's also quite silly as we are being told to avoid public transport as much as possible yet this measure will see an increase in people using the tube. I'm so uncomfortable using the tube at the moment because I want to protect my parents so I walk as much as possible or drive them to the shops, etc.

The government seems to be dangling the bailout and tagging these conditions which would impact small businesses, residents, transport etc especially during a pandemic. And it appears to be doing this for political reasons too.

You've already stated that there will be no hike in fare prices however, how do you propose to fight them on the extension of the congestion charge?

And if the congestion charge extension is to go ahead, will you be reinstating the residents discount?

I am a midwife and my husband a nurse. We live in the congestion zone and have done for many years.

We did not have a need for a car until recently. 2 children under 4years, we are both working full time and extremenly hard. We need a car and cant afford to pay congestion charge every day.  Please give key workers who live in the congestion zone the discount. I hate using the tubes to go to work in these times and carry the virus to the vunerable mothers and newborns. There is no room on the tubes to social disctance it is a hazard for hospital workers

Good evening to the Mayor and other readers, I am using this space as I have not found another option.  As a 71 year old who is being extremely careful not entering any closed spaces. The mayor is committing a grave error and punishing people by wanting to extend the congestion zone ! You, the mayor are planning to isolate ue even more by taxing us and anyone who needs to visit us even for an emergency! For someone who is a member of the Labour Party . I am all for environmental  safety .

Secondly the area of Finchley Central and Temple Fortune has an extremely high rate of infection though I don't enter closed spaces shops etc., Even so people can carry infection.

what are you doing to ensure that guidelines are followed everywhere ? Talking to the government is one thing but the expectation that the police can cope on their own is another.  One can talk the talk but doing is something else

Streetspace is an important initiative, but it's being patchily implemented by the boroughs. What are you doing to ensure that the boroughs work together to create a joined up network of safe cycle and walking spaces? And how are you ensuring that cycle routes adhere to best practices (the ones in Harrow for example, are much lower quality than the ones in Camden).

Also, the boroughs had big, shovel-ready transport plans to make our streets safer and quieter, under the TfL Local Implementation Plans. My street - a dangerous rat run - for example, was going to be made into a safe 20mph zone. But that's now on hold. When will those funds be released?

Dear Mayor

As many Londoners I have been affected by the Covid 19 particularly financially, luckily still healthy at present. I work for the NHS so I am a key worker and I have never stopped working. On the other hand, my wife is trying to start a new business, she works from home and her business has been heavily affected . She still has not been able to start earning and her income is practically null.  I cycle to work every day and my wife works from home, but we have a car and we pay tax and insurance the same as other people who use the car on a daily basis. We practically usa the car when on holidays or very rarely during the weekend, even if most of the time we walk or cycle.

I would propose a way to pay the road tax and insurance with a very reduced form, maybe tracking vehicles and so on. The tracking could be installed by MOT garages or so. Involving people not to use cars would have a number of beniits for London in many ways.

The cycle lanes need to go due to the fact that i have seen the emergency services struggling to get through. Peoples lives could be in danger and the emergency services are being slowed down by the road changes.

Are these changes reversible ?

I appreciate the intention & effort to improve London's air & reduce traffic. However I find that the imposition of the streetscape cycle lanes with many 'no left' or 'no right' turns for vehicles has increased traffic & journey times which does not improve air quality.

The space for emergency vehicles to pass safely has been reduced significantly.

Surely we must all learn to share the roads, cyclists, cars, delivery vehicles taxis, mopeds as well as electric scooters.

Since the introduction of cycle lanes with restricted left/right turns I see junctions which were not hazardous, become a hazard. I am a cyclist as well as a driver. At certain junctions cyclists are not stopping at red traffic lights but blaze on, ignoring signals. Traffic signals create a flow as well as gaps for vehicles to turn left/right safely - but not if cyclists jump lights.

In the streetscape programme it says there are 'black spots' for cyclists, but it avoids mentioning where specifically. Not every left/right turn is a black spot but I fear that streetscape cycle lanes will create them.

Streetscape cycle lanes on red routes are challenging local businesses. People can not pick up goods which may be too heavy to carry. There is no place for them to stop for even 20 minutes. This system assumes that everyone is able-bodied and can carry any-sized purchase. A business needs space to load/unload merchandise near their premises, and not create more congestion in side roads.

There are no spaces for disabled/blue badge holders to stop near chemists, doctors surgeries & restaurants. This creates & increases stress for these residents. The consequences are an appalling & disappointing step backwards in London's transport system.

Please remove what has been put in place & start again. Future electric cars & electric delivery vans will still need road space, alongside cyclists. We need to create a shared road space that can be used respectfully by everyone.

Most people aren't prepared to cycle on the road because they don't think it's safe. There are too many drivers willing to ignore the law and the Highway Code. Yet we need to change the way we travel. We need more people cycling to help overcome problems such as dangerously overcrowded public transport.

We need to create a shared road space that can be used respectfully by everyone.

That would be great, but I don't think it's possible. How would you achieve it?

We are entering a new era by leaving the Europpean Union, and it is important that we are viewed as a modern progressive city, where mulinational companies will vist and form trade links.

What is the purpose of destroying the road system in London, which only ensures that it is almost impossible to get around, and that incoming businessmen will get so frustrated that they will no ;onger visit.

The road system is being turned into one continuous bike lane, where it should be being groomed to carry only electric cars.

I cannot see incoming businessment cycling round london to their meetings, nor would I at my advance age consider getting on a bicycle.

If TFL thinks that the roads are too conjested, then stop licencing companies like Uber, which will immediately result in an enormuos reduction in the traffic flow.

While I support anti pollution measures and am keen to promote active transport where possible, how can the transport planning authority allow what seems to have been the random introduction of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in areas where they are manifestly unsuitable? They seem to have been imposed without consultation, foresight or consideration for the impact on both local and wider areas. Surely a planning authority should preview and model the impact of such changes and not bring them in without proper consideration?( Of course one way of reducing pollution which has not been considered is reducing car size). In Dulwich we are currently living with a threat of  time restrictions covering four or more hours a day, which permit no motor  traffic at all. not even local traffic, as there seems to be no money for permits. This is absurd in an area which has commercial and educational interests, besides residential. How has this happened?

London has a congestion charge to encourage drivers to use their vehicles less.  It also has a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in London to become cleaner.   Would the Mayor consider a Noise Emmission charge, based on the decibels emitted by the vehicle, as measured by the manufacturer or via MOT?   Noise is a pollutant as bad for Londoners health as exhaust emissions.  Quiet electric vehicles would of course be exempt; the most offensive, such as modified motorcycles, would be taxed.  This would encourage drivers to switch to quieter, less-stress inducing vehicles.  Not only Londoners would benefit -- the city's wildlife would be less stressed and we might perhaps even enjoy hearing birdsong again.

How is this meant to be effetctive when people are already financially struggling due to lack of jobs?

In the meantime people like myself who suffer from lung problems are struggling to go to places like supermarkets as the main roads are so congested and the emissions from idling cars are too much making ot hard for people like myself to breathe. Is this the plan, if so in the meantime peoples health ar suffering

The problem is the Uber cabs, having increased London traffic by 50% and the "Waze" app, something owned by google and "partnered" with TfL,  This is impossible to beat.

Emergency vehicles noise levels. Since working from home from the past months, I have noticed that the noise levels of these vehicles are extremely high, really disturbing and causing noise pollution. I understand the purpose behind this high level of noise and I appreciate the work done by our NHS but I am sure that multiple ways can be found in order to reduce that noise (see other big cities, New York, Paris etc.) Also, this does not happen only at day, but during the night as well where it woke us up lots of times. As more and more people are working from home, I will ask the mayor to please reconsider the noise levels of these vehicles and reduce it accordingly in order to achieve their purpose on getting to their destination faster in the most efficient and "quiet" way.
