Culture and the creative industries contribute £52 billion to London’s economy every year and provide one in six jobs in London. Essential lockdown measures introduced to slow the spread of the coronavirus have had a catastrophic impact on the sector. Research from the culture trade body The Creative Industries Federation suggests that 60% of creative organisations won’t survive the next two months. Half of the industry’s workforce is self-employed or freelance and many creative industries businesses are excluded from business rates relief and grants from Government.
This is a snapshot of some of the ways City Hall is supporting culture, creative industries and night time businesses:
- Culture at Risk Business Support Fund to help save grassroots music venues; LGBTQ+ venues; independent cinemas; and creative workspaces.
- London Community Response Fund launched 14th April is also supporting arts and culture.
- PayItForward crowdfunding platform launched to help businesses trade by pre-selling vouchers, goods and services.
- Lobbying Government – to urge them to fund the survival of the creative economy and support self-employed workers.
- London Together – to help Londoners in lockdown access culture and educational resources from home.
- Cultural programmes – supporting existing cultural and trade programmes (London Games Festival and London Fashion Week online; Brent Unlocked giving skills training and support for local artists as part of Brent Borough of Culture).
- World Culture Cities Forum – weekly meetings with cities across the world to look at common ways of achieving exit and recovery.
- Recovery Planning – working with promotional agency London & Partners and industry partners to prepare cultural venues and creative industries to emerge safely from lockdown.

Show full commentI realise that there is a laudable emphasis on air quality, and I understand the wish to implement this as far as possible in central London, but the perception - fostered by government instructions to avoid public transport - is that public transport is not safe, especially for the over 60s. So many of us will wish to drive. If, as I have heard, the congestion charge is going to be extended to later at night and 7 days a week, this is a serious disincentive to people coming in to support our theatres and concert halls. You will not have an audience if people can't get there. Or somehow, public transport needs to be made safer, with many many more trains and buses, especially when the furlough is over and many more people will be travelling to work.

As has been mentioned by others here, C-19 has not been shown to be any worse than many other health threats we live with every day without even thinking about, let alone panicking like this. This is a spectacular overreaction that is causing more harm than the virus ever could.

Show full commentI strongly support compulsory masks for all indoor public spaces, but the situation on public transport already shows active management and enforcement would be needed (on trains I'm finding about 30% non-compliance, across a wide range of people). Similarly I'd want to see well-trained staff being proactive in managing distancing as there are evidently people who just don't have it in mind any longer.
Although I'm keen to return to galleries and museums, and support lots of measures to make them safe, I suspect the measures will strip away too much of the pleasure of such visits and I may not go very often while the threat remains.
A practical step for art and other exhibitions that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere would be to have much larger captions on the walls so that people can read them from further away, avoiding the temptation to cluster closely to peer at them.

In fact, they should have done this already.

London (TfL in particularly) have been crippled by having a mayor who's more concerned with global grandstanding than looking after the people of London, but hopefully now he's revealed his mental health issues he'll step down and allow someone who's up to the job take charge.

Show full commentI believe that the public wearing face masks and social distancing and the fear being driven by the focus on numbers of cases and deaths when definitive identity of Covid19 as distinct from other flu and similar viruses is not known, is positively harmful to the public's immune systems. We don't get hysterical about normal flu and traffic deaths. The associated fear has driven too many to suicide, seriously over drinking and mental health crises not to mention the results of the economic crisis generated.

We need to end the crazy social distance guidelines that are crippling this sector. There is no basis for this continued assault, and it must end NOW. I am an artist myself, and will migrate if this continues..... as will the rest. And the cultural capital of the world will cease to exist, or it will move elsewhere, where there is more recognition of the gift to humanity from the arts... the gift that moves us, connects us to source, and reminds us we are human.... making life worth living. Is this not important? I believe it is just as important as clean food and water, and housing.

Show full commentActually I feel that limiting numbers of attendees and wearing face masks, plus keeping social distancing between tables is an absolute necessity and should be an strick requirement and if people don't comply with this, they should be reminded what the regulations are and if they still don't comply should be firmly told to leave. Selfish behavior cost lives. This is not none compliance ,it could be potentially manslaughter. There should me no exception and no personal choice involved. You don't have much choice if someone else's choice to comply makes you dead from a covid 19 infection. Someones personal choice could cause the death of another person. That is a unacceptable, serious injustice to the living.
As for supermarkets and people, I think I have seen the most stupid behavior by public in supermarkets, with people bundling together to look at things on shelves more than any other place. I would be 100% behind the implementation of one way trafficking

Show full commentI would feel happy to visit museums, galleries, stately homes etc as it is possible to limit the numbers and they are often large buildings - not so keen on them having one way systems/set routes - people manage perfectly well in supermarkets without such restrictions. I feel the use of face masks should mostly be discretionary - fine on public transport, but in other spaces it is often not needed - if the place is not busy people should make their own choice. I agree with some earlier comments - I would like to see some things move outside - i.e. art displayed in the open. The lack of TOILETS is very limiting - even going to meet a friend in a park is cut short by the need to return home to use the loo! I mainly miss face to face activities i.e. book groups - maybe organisations could be given funding/support to develop outside spaces to allow groups to meet more safely.

You can never eradicate health problems by locking up the population... there will always be bugs, and you've just got to face that fact.... as we do every year with the flu, which kills as many people, without the healthy being condemned. Keep yourself healthy, take responsibility for yourself, and that's the best way to protect yourself and others.

Show full commentI'm trying to reply to Hamanitam who seems to feel that mask wearing is ridiculous and her or his personal freedom is paramount. Have you not seen what is happening in the US? Unfettered freedoms and people doing what makes them feel good = death rates going up and economy suffering because of it, not to mention the mental anguish you seem so keen on alleviating by going out and having a good time. You must be very young/lucky not to have any vulnerable people in your life. Also, doctors wear masks all the time and for long hours. They don't complain it is 'pointless, uncomfortable and detrimental to my health'. I thought the British were a little more stoic than they have turned out to be. Look how the Italians and French locked down hard - they are now free - you may have had to suffered some discomfort doing that, but it works. Perhaps you would have been too delicate to suffer such a tough lockdown. Well, don't worry, you're free to jump around and enjoy going to the pub as much as you like come tomorrow. Good luck.

I have purchased one to practice but can only manage about 30 seconds. I know it's mind over matter so will persevere however there is nothing that I'm really missing. In fact I have enjoyed the lockdown. I have my morning walks in the park and my occasional phone or video calls with friends. I have been on my own for the last 3 years and have done many things so now I don't need to feel guilty about just wanting to stay home. So I definitely will not be participating in any social activities, and as a former shopaholic am saving money which as a pensioner is no bad thing.

If masks are compulsory the distance measures will vanish, i feel distance is still important.
The governments measures have lost meaning and given contradictions
Dom Cummings has given people an excuse to be selfish
I would visit events and businesses if I felt safe. I’m fit but I don’t want to spread it to those I love.
Id like to visit museums galleries. Operas. Etc.
I have been to national trust places. It was difficult to get a booking but was enjoyable and felt organised.
For restaurants i would need great faith in the owners and staff happy to remove mask and eat if I’m separated or screened. they would need to sell all the safety measures online.
I will not go to bars or pubs
hoping to go to the dolomites walking. we’ve good cycle masks 0.3 for the flight and for gondalos lifts and going to the hotels restaurant table. it’s family run they’re elderly I feel they will run a safe environment otherwise we will eat in our room I will clean our room myself when we arrive
For outdoor events if organised well with responsible people. I’d contemplate that ie piano concert/comedy event
They will have to limit people and provide spaces between groups
Essentially if the environment and people at a venue are well thought out managed and considerate I’d be happy to go
I’d take a mask and sanitizer specs
perhaps start with a select few customers and build a reputation, with a booking system to control amounts
build confidence slowly. Otherwise I feel most people will stay away.
An independent review site or HSE certificate could provide reassurances

I would have no problem following directions put in by galleries/museums etc even the wearing of a face covering. However, the bringing in of ordering things by apps discriminates against those of us who do not have that technology. Menus posted in windows which can then be photographed would help.
I am not worried about traveling on public transport as I travel when it's quiet but if I am mandated to wear a face covering why don't the drivers?
