Reducing violent crime

We'd like your views on the new Violence Reduction Unit and what Londoners can do to help prevent violence.

Together with the Met Police and specialists in health, youth services and local government, City Hall has announced plans to establish a new Violence Reduction Unit. It aims to tackle the causes of violent crime, such as poverty, mental ill-health and lack of opportunities. Alongside this, the Violent Crime Taskforce will continue its work to take knives and other weapons off the streets.

What do you think of the measures above? Do you think that it is important to bring together different services and involve communities when designing solutions to tackle violent crime?  What can Londoners, families and communities do to help prevent violence?

If the cyclist's version of events is accurate,'disappointing' performance by our Metropolitan police is an understatement.  CCTV from a local restaurant retrieved by the cyclist on his own initiative might lead to tracing the lethally dangerous driver.  Use of Tfl CCTV by the police - so long as they are proactive in using it - must help to solve crimes like this one - or even prevent them.

Warning:  don't watch the newscast video if you are in the slightest bit squeamish. The event beggars belief.

Local Council's are using up most of the money given to them by the Council Tax Payer, Revenue, and Government grants which is also much of the reasons there is a lack of financial resoures available where it really matters.

In this day and age where we have progressive technology it is extremely unnecessary to have such large Greater London Local Councils most being miles away from the local Taxpayer. Instead, they should be replaced with a small 'Local Town Hall's in each constiuency, this will help free up an enoumous amount of money to help run every London constituency very well, which also means the right amount of police made available to parade on the streets of London.

In addition, a well functioning 'Town Hall' with the voted MP and Councillor is also located will help bring about a much more community based London which will help tackle many issues.

Currently, my own local council of Enfield, regularly post an 'Enfield Magzine' to each household, informing us how much they are struggling financially and of further future cuts to our services, with the added opportunity to add lots of photos of themselves posing, all from public money, money they inform us they do not have for our public services.

Crime is increasing and unstoppable in London.

There are variouis roots to crimes and these need to be addressed. Life in general has largely evolved, given that most parents are working full time which means most children are either home alone after school, or out and about for hours, this is an issue that needs addressing.

Also, on Fridays and the weekend there is a need for police to be walking the streets of London where there are pubs, as there are many people who go out to get drunk in order to unleashed a beast within them in public, I have seen some really idotic, scary behaviour as I am going home.

Yesterday a huge kitchen knife was found in the car of a man drinking beer in a car in Enfield and no further action was taken. Police need to be empowered to hand out actual punishments to these people.

Resources should be allocated based on the amount of crime in the area and the population. Upper Edmonton has un unbelievable quantity of violent crime and yet it has the same police resources as smaller, quieter wards. Residents are clear that a visible police presence has an immediate effect and yet it is not happening.

It's a simple answer - more, visible police especially in high crime areas, and zero tolerance policy and punishment. Stop paying people to sit around in offices in City Hall and mull over this and give their salaries to police! Empower police to properly punish anybody involved in knife crime, carrying a knife around! how is this difficult?????

I also find it slightly ludicrous that money is being given to anti knife crime 'community groups'. Stopping people killing each other on the streets with knives is not the role of a community group - it's for well-paid, trained, safe and fully equipped professionals

We need more Police and more stop and search. Tougher sentences, not just cautions for carrying knives. Young people need to know they will face criminal chanrges for random attacks. This  happened to a friend of mines son this weekend, he was badly beaten up and many onlookers just stood by. One lady came forward and called the police but even the police said if the group were caught they would only get a talking to. Some of these thugs dont spare a thought for the injuries, physical and mental they are causing. I am not sure what is happening to society when they can maim or kill someone without a second thought. Back to basics.

I agree that it's not just a police issue but an issue for society. However, a friend was recently held up at knife point and his phone stolen he reported it to the police with a good discription of the two muggers. The police told him that because he came to no physical harm that they wouldn't be investigated or following up his case. Last week he was mugged again at knife point and because of the lack of police action from the first incident he hasn't reported it to the Met.

I suspect that he is not alone in this non-reporting and the incidents of knife crime are considerably under-reported.

yes we need the police to keep our streets safe but parents must take the lead in preventing children from gangs and not leave their children to be the responsibily of the state.

we need to interact more with our children.

get home at a reasonable time from work not long after schoolm closes to make sure young boys are home and safe.

stop send boys under the age of 16 to corner shops or errands until the streets are safer.etc etc

I think community policing is important and In Wandsworth has been largely scrapped. I work next to an estate in Wandsworth and unless there is an operation, you never see a copper.

But near to where I live, A minister was attending a private dinner and I counted 8 PCs dotted about the area.. Policing for some but little for thew majority and its the majority who pay

I would like to see a 'ten years for a knife sentence' as a proper deterent against carrying a knife. Where are the knife bins that were so prolific and successful years ago. How about, seeing as all the police stations are gone...placing local police bases in secondary school properties, get some involvement with the teenagers before a small minority turn to crime. How about police been out looking for crime at night, which is when all the crime happens near me. I think bad parents know about their criminal kids and should face punishment too as they did after the 2011? London riots- whole families were evicted due to colluding with the crime of their offspring. People soon get tired of starting over. I am fed up with lawless London and limiting my families lives to to fear of violence or criminality.

Whilst watching a London TV programme regarding London crime recently,I notice something wrong. On this programme the audience was predominntly made of black youths and the policeman on the show was a white policeman, now this should not be an issue but unfortunately it matters a great deal.

Black youths in my opinion require mainly black police persons to address them, even when it is just a stop and search but without the agression that comes with superiority. Black youths that fall into the world of crime ususally come from an unstable background/environment and need police persons that they feel they can relate too and in return understands them. Personally, I find many black persons to be wonderful speakers and with the right humanitarian qualities black police persons could be a positive influence on black youth.

Oddly, though the police force in London clearly have very few black police persons, and acutally thinking about it, I have never seen a chinese police person, neither a sikh, Indian or mediterranean police persons despite many Londoners are decendants from first, second, third and even fourth generations of immigrants, that is not to say they do not exist but there are clearly very thin on the ground.

For the police to really be sucessful in directly dealing with young criminals they needs to become much more welcoming to those decendants of other nationalities. In truth there is no such thing as a pure race unless one comes directly from a tribe in Africa or the Amazon, in fact reading on our own rich British history one will learn that Britain had many invaders from the Romans, which consisted persons of many different nationalities and which remained in Britain and based in London for four hundred years,Vikings and Normans also stayed in Britain for a great many years all these men married native women.

The fact that gangs and their connection with drugs has not been mention in the opening of this discussion is clearly deliberate.

The Mayor and the police know fully that the prime increase in crime in London is due to gangs and their control over areas in London in connection with drugs. Such crime activity used to be known just in the south of London, but in recent years gangs have spread their net far and wide, covering the whole of London.

A focus in the right direction is required.

Hi MarlonB

Thank you for taking part in this discussion. We shared your comment with our colleagues at the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).  They told us that "Since the Mayor announced the creation of a Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) for London in September 2018, a Partnership Reference Group has been set up. It includes a broad range of community representation. This group has agreed an initial work programme to mobilise the VRU and the appointment of Lib Peck as the Director of the VRU was announced on 14th of January.

The Partnership Reference Group agreed that an initial area of work would be to undertake a homicide and serious violence case review. This will provide the evidence to better understand the areas of high-risk, so we can prioritise efforts and resources to tackle the areas we can make the biggest impact to reduce violence. This review will be able to establish to what extent being a looked after child in care may have on the risks of becoming a victim or perpetrator of knife crime.

Your point about the importance of communities being an integral part of the long-term solution to prevent violence is well made. That is why we involve communities in developing the VRU. As part of that process, we held a community involvement event at City Hall on 14th of January."

We hope this helps.

What do you think Londoners, families and communities can do to help prevent violence?

More police of course would help to an extent, however, it has been pointed out many times (yet people still fail to take on board) is that this is central governments failing. Police cuts have occurred nationwide, not only in London. Save your time complaining about the police to the mayor and write to your local MP/take to the streets and protest. Let's not make this new 'volunteer police force' the norm.

Moreover, let's absolutely start tackling the problem of social inequality and poverty. Again, much of the problem here lies with central government and not the mayor. Cuts to school funding has detrimentally effected education, which is the first crucial step to bringing up new generations of people with skills that enable them to fit into society, rather than turning to crime and the inevitable violence that follows. There needs to be more youth services but also just services in general, for the already disenfranchised population.

Another thing I see a lot of is to crack down on drugs. This war on drugs has been a complete and epic failure from the birth of the concept, which primarily arose due to racist and political motivations. So much criminal activity is due to or funded by the underground drug trade, which is a £multi-billion industry. I'm not necessarily saying to legalise everything, but by bringing the drugs trade above ground and regulating it in a similar way to how we regulate alcohol and tobacco (both of which are absolutely just drugs but with their own special terminology) we would eliminate the criminal aspect of the trade and hence reduce the crime involved. Both alcohol and tobacco are far worse than many of the drugs out their which we are scare mongered into thinking are dangerous, yet the most dangerous aspect of them is lack of education and the fact that underground drugs are often cut with dangerous substances in order for dealers and gangs to make a profit. Additionally, we would see less small time dealers sent to prison for trying to make some easier money than in the current saturated job market, where workers are exploited by managers, owners and CEOs. Its no wonder people turn to selling drugs to earn a living. Those sent to jail are also statistically at a much higher chance of ending up reoffending (basically jail's as they are currently run lead to more violent crime), due to a lack of opportunity to use their jail time to learn new skills to be able to create a better life for themselves when they get out. These short term, unbeneficial jailterms do nothing but line fat cats pockets whilst perpetuating the problem. Of course these are all problems that are mostly out of the mayor's jurisdiction and require an overhaul in government.
