Show full commentThe need for tax reform has always been there but now is as good a time as any to begin to introduce it. Today most of the "rates" paid on property are based on the size of the building, the number of floore, the floor area, etc. This system is wrong because it inhibits the building of more useful properties since he/she has limited capital for investment in the building developments. Instead the rates should be based on LAND VALUES. This does not place any restriction on the amount of development but it does ensure that the most useful and best sites are used to their maximum capacity and that speculation in sites (as their values rise with improved infrastructures) is no longer worthwhile.
The theory for this was presentsd by American (US) economist Henry George in 1879 in his classic book "Progress and Poverty". It sold 3 million and is still in print! In parts of Pitsburg and othe regions of the US a system of rating was tried where some of the tax was based on land value and some on floor area. It helped to encourage the developments, but it was not held to be so successful because it was done insincerely and stopped the land monopolist lobby from making gains. So before it is thied in London the municipilites should first ensure that tyhe politics of these lobbys are not allowed to interfere.

Show less of commentWe will not stop the immigration of non European persons, these are the persons that come here with nothing and expect everything. The Europeans come here to work to do the work that residents of uk do not want to undertake, we already have control of our borders I and everyone reading this have never just slipped into Britain we gain far more by being part of the European community than we loose. We have a trade agreement already and we are negotiating for the same. Also if you want to expand these trade deals for the rest of the world, listen to what these countries want in return, free passage for there citizens, this is what was required on Mrs May’s trip to India. Wake up people we are going to regret leaving Europe and this is a fact not some ideal gossip or information spread by the Brexiteers to cause panic and mayhem

Membership of the EU is complex and complicated. If being 'in' has caused problems then we should try and solve them but leaving the biggest trade & cultural advantage this country has ever had isnt going to help. Its running away
We were ill informed before the referendum and a lot of folk voted according to other peoples xenophobic agendas .We are not America, we welcome the downtrodden and the fleeing (Kinder transports and refugees). We dont build walls, we open doors. Please cancel the whole stupid mess and lets get back to living without the overhanging worry of the future out of Europe

If the younger members of the population got more involved with the low skilled oportunities instead of expecting money for very little, or nothing, the crime and gang culture would probably fal,l if general attitudes went back to the culture I grew up with. i.e. You worked and saved for anything you wanted and did not expect anything to be given to you, starting at the bottom and working your way up a ladder
Another problem is THE MAYOR who is so obviously pro EU and therefore appears to be doing all he can against the country's democratic decision.

London is a truly international city and benefits enormously from that so erecting barriers is only going to diminish the economy and the job opportunities. Agree much has to be done long term to encourage the young of the values of education and skills but that's not going to solve and inevitable post Brexit exodus and new controls on immigation.

Your reasons for staying in the EU may have merit, but they did not win the vote.

EU basically has open borders - anybody from N Africa, Middle East, Asia etc can come into EU
on the pretext of asylum / refugees. I expect Brexit to stop these new EU immigrants to simply
walk into the UK. We already have a huge pressure on public services, NHS etc and we don't
want to make it worse.

Show full commentEU has open borders, although not for people asking asylum, but the UK hasn't, even if it's part of the EU. Every person coming in the UK has to show an ID and if they are not welcome they can't get in. The UK already has some priliviges compared to other EU nations. Most people from Africa or Asia that are "free" to come in the UK it's because they come from an ex British Colonies, it has nothing to do with EU. The pressure on public services and mainly NHS has nothing to do with immigrants but it's caused by a very poor management and massive waste. If Uk politicians had used for the NHS the same amount of energy and time they gave to Brexit I'm pretty sure the Uk would now have the best NHS. Immigrants actually help NHS because they pay taxes.
If you don't want immigrants from poor countries to come in the UK the best way would be to become a sensible and conscius consumer and put pressure on corporations that exploits our Planet and People all over the world for their benefit and then it's all of us who have to pay for their greed. Corporations deal without borders and it's not by putting borders that we'll solve the problems we are all in. Poor countries are the most affected by climate change and wars so of course people from poor countries flee from their homes. As consumers we are partly responsible for this and against corporations our governments are pretty helpless. Let's start to regulate the corporations, to fight for climate change and peace and you'll see that nobody will want to come to the Uk because nobody is happy to leave their home unless they are obliged.

Show full commentWhat am I worried about? Where to start! I have always loved to be part of the European community. For almost 40 years I have run The London Au Pair & Nanny Agency bringing over young people "on a cultural and linguistic experience" from mainland Europe to my lovely host-families in London where they live with the family and lend a hand with childcare. They attend a local language school to improve their English. This enables hard-working [not super-rich] parents to continue in their jobs knowing that their children will be cared for before and after-school. Without an Au Pair the parents' jobs will be extremely vulnerable. The government will not give the Au Pair industry any assurances that this precious programme will continue. Au Pairs have been coming here from mainland Europe for the past 120 years. They have never been asked to pay a high sum of money for a visa or to prove that they have a few thousand pounds in the bank before being granted permission to stay. These are very scary times.

British young people steer clear of these jobs for good reason.

Currently those roles are very much open to UK citizens, and yet I don't see them queueing to fill them. What makes you think that'll change if suddenly they all become vacant?
What'll actually happen is that the cost of labour will go so high that small businesses, pubs, cleaners, delivery, etc etc etc etc will no longer be able to afford people. Want a pizza? Collect it yourself. Want a cleaner? Pay a premium...or do it yourself. Want a beer? You know where the (queue for the) bar is. Want to eat out? Tough - they can't afford staff anymore, so they've shut down.
