Used to have a decent butcher near us but that closed. However I would far prefer to use independent food stores but they are priced out of our town centres
Thanks everyone for sharing your views. Some of you have mentioned you try to avoid plastics bags and packaging.
Do you ever base your decisions on what to eat on ethical reasons?
Are you any more likely to buy food from shops or restaurants that use sustainable sources, or have other hallmarks like FairTrade or Living Wage accreditation? Why or why not?

I shop in my local supermarket which is within walking distance. There are no greengrocers nearby and the only butchers are Halal, and I don't buy meat from them.

Veg box and extras like eggs, yoghurt, etc delivered once a week, sourced from places that treat their animals well, grown naturally, with minimal packaging and transport. Supplemented by trips to local market and farmers’ markets and the supermarket where necessary. Don’t have a car so this makes it possible and pleasurable to get good food at reasonable cost as long as you can cook. We must cut packaging across the board though.
We have been using Growing Communities organic veg scheme for about six years which gives us all the vegetables we need each week. And I tend to use a greengrocer near my work for fruit during the week.

For cupboard staples like pasta, bread, etc. it tends to be from supermarkets near work or near home, or from online shops from Ocado.
I buy my food from supermarkets, as it is the closest option for me.
I would love if supermarkets allowed me to buy in bulk, so I could bring my own containers to buy any quantity I need of products such as sugar, pasta, milk, flour...

I would love if supermarkets allowed me to buy in bulk, so I could bring my own containers to buy any quantity I need of products such as sugar, pasta, milk, flour, yoghurt, even shampoo, and washing liquids.
Unfortunately, a lot of veggies are unnecessarily wrapped in plastics, I avoid buying them, but that limits what I can take home.
A local market where I could buy in bulk near home would be excellent for me.

We do our basic household and grocery shopping at Tesco's, but prefer Whole Food for international products, prepared food, dips, etc. All the supermarkets use unnecessary amounts of packaging, but we are delighted that people are waking up and demanding that the packaging be reduced in volume and restricted to biodegadable materials. We are disturbed to see shops such as Boots and SuperDrug expand their food sections rapidly in recent years, focussing on lunch items for office and shop workers, much of which is excessively packaged. We would like to see Westminster launch education programmes for office and shop workers to encourage them to refill plastic bottles from the tap instead of buying more bottles, and to buy sandwiches and other items in a paper bag, not a plastic container. After all, we create the demand and the food companies respond to our preferences. We must change our behaviour first. Thanks!
Lewisham market where can as can avoid plastic. Percy ingle as can buy bread without plastic and my local italian deli where can buy coffee and meat without plastic. The supermarkets are awful plastic monsters.

Sadly, mostly from supermarkets - actual and online. I boycott Tesco (because so unsupportably unpleasant in every way) and now Sainsbury's (because of Asda merge). Shops selling fresh produce near where I live are few, dirty and stock poor...

Shops selling fresh produce near where I live are few, dirty and stock poor quality produce. Really HATE all the plastic, film, unnecessary packaging used for food these days. Would love to get veg boxes delivered, but access in our block is too problematic.
Most of my food is delivered by supermarket chain. Lots of local restaurants and food shops where I live, but due to working, comuting and family life, thank goodness I can shop on line

We get most of our food from the local supermarkets, but sometimes order online with Sainsbury's home delivery. We get fruit and veg from the Riverford Box scheme.

I get almost all my vegetables from Sutton Community farm. You can’t beat their quality. Most other good shopping gets delivered by Tesco. And about once a week I go for dinner st a local restaurant in Morden or Wimbledon.

Community Member 7 years agoOne of the questions on the food survey was something like:
Do or would you help at a food bank?
What does this tell you about the people in power and MP's?
They do not care.
