New data protection law
Will you be taking any actions in relation to your own data when the new General Data Protection Regulation becomes law?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be implemented into UK and EU law on 25 May 2018. It will replace and strengthen current UK laws on how personal data is stored, shared and how to handle data breaches and new technology.
It will give you the right to be ‘forgotten’ when an organisation does not have a legal basis for holding your data; the right to have your personal data rectified if it is inaccurate or incomplete; the right to access all the data an organisation keeps about you; and the right to object to automated decision-making and ‘profiling’ (where an organisation uses computers to make decisions about you).

Sometimes a certain amount of data can be useful if stored, providing we (ie the person to whom it is referred) can access it and know what or where it is stored. However, having already received emails regarding the update taking place on 25th May, I have had a problem reading the long complicated explanations with links to other long complicated explanations a lot of which I don't fully understand.
I hope I'm not being too cynical, but will anything change that much? I do hope so.....Just reading what I have typed, and wondering if I am starting to speak in the same sort of gobbledegook language myself!!!

I don't believe organaisations should have the automatic right to profit from the sale of my information, if that's not part of the legislative change then I'm not convinced there's a real benefit here.

Community Member 7 years agoRunning a very small company this means a lot of extra unpaid work to avoid the twenty million Euro fine(!) I think it a good idea as regards big companies but lets face it, if you don't want your data spread everywhere, don't joint...

Community Member 7 years agoIn terms of the voluntary work which I do, I have no idea what this change in the law entails and I shall do my best to avoid it. There is more than enough to do keeping track of the demands of the Charity Commission, HMRC and the Church....

There is more than enough to do keeping track of the demands of the Charity Commission, HMRC and the Church. As for my personal data I am hardly bothered. I don't want them to steal my money, but for the rest I really don't care who knows what about me. I am insignificant in terms of society as a whole and not worth spending resource on as an individual. This must be true for the vast majority of people, whose apparent neurosis I do not share

Show full commentI'm responding to requests as they come from mailing lists and membership-based organisations, to opt in or out of various databases, which is fine by me. As a trustee of one small charity, and a committee member with two others, I'm also spending many unpaid hours, along with other volunteers, struggling to implement the new regulations in modest non-profit groups. One size does not fit all, and this project is wasting a phenomenal amount of time and effort in asking small organisations, both commercial and not-for-profit, to comply with the same rules as multinationals and marketing companies.

Community Member 7 years agoCouldn't agree with you more, this legislation is really aimed at big corporates and their marketing techniques and small charities are having to spend precious resources on it.
