Free tap water with Refill London
Have you heard of Refill London? The scheme will help you locate places to refill your bottle with free tap water.
To help reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles and make drinking water more accessible in public spaces, the Mayor has launched a scheme to help Londoners locate places to refill their bottles with free tap water.
The discussion ran from 15 March 2018 - 09 May 2018

Community Member 7 years agoGood idea!
Would be great to get good coverage of major areas in London and an easy way to find nearest outlet offering the service.
I hope Londoners will support the businesses who offer this service.

Community Member 7 years agoPublic houses have always been required to provide free tap water. Many have recently made a positive move in that direction by putting a supply on the bar.

It would be better if some could be located outside of private shops, cafes, banks etc - maybe in parks or next to information street posts/ signs, etc? This would benefit the general public and the homeless. They'd need to be push button taps so that people don't use more water than necessary, but it would be really useful for all people. (and great if it had a purification nozzle because tap water in London tastes nasty).

One problem that is of course not publicised about London's water supply, is the high level of oestrogen in tap water due to so many women being on the pill and the fact that our water is to a large extent recycled. If you ask Thames Water, they say they are not required to measure the level of hormones so they don't know what it is! As none of the purification methods used have any effect on this type of molecule, it tends to become more concentrated. Clean water doesn't just mean an acceptable bacterial level.

Community Member 7 years agoThis is a great idea. I hope it is rolled out across the rest of London soon. We need some cool, collapsable bottles to take around with us now :-)

Community Member 7 years agoPLEASE NOTE THE LINK TO REFILL.ORG IN YOUR LINKED PRESS RELEASE DOESN'T WORK.
ALSO ON REFILL.ORG THERE IS NO LONDON SCHEME LISTED....
Maybe the app works better...
Digital basics need to be sorted before you publicise it!

Community Member 7 years agoI don't like the thought of you wasting people's taxes on designing an app to tell people where the nearest eating and drinking establishment is. I wish you would spend that money on a few public water fountains instead.

So I think this is a most excellent initiative.

Community Member 7 years agoGood to see this initiative being rolled out. How quickly will we be able to see the validation and a roll out to other locations/boroughs?

How much has this "scheme" cost to implement? Are these hosts going to get a refund for all the extra usage that will appear on their undoubtedly metered bills when it doesn't result in extra customers?

Show less of commentThames Water better not act against this scheme, as I think the Public wrath would frighten their big shareholders (mainly foreign!). Instead, they should apply a discount to providers to compensate for the extra consumption.
As an added bonus, it would be a wonderful gesture if Thames Water would sponsor public toilets as well!!
