Rugbygirl, I am facing the problem. Age discrimination affects us over age 50's. I was a supermarket manager for 20 years and decided to change jobs and become a waitress. Went to Chinatown and all seven restaurants I applied rejected me...

i have always thought of a career as a life long commitment to a work path - from the early years until I choose to retire. I am 61 and have been working since I was 16 in and around London. There has been no break in my work pattern - even whilst having my family and i have never claimed state support. Following two redundancies in recent years from large organisations and with a fairly comprehensive CV it has become seemingly impossible to find meaningful full time paid work. I am in no doubt that this is due to my age. The government now requires me to work for an extra 7 years until i can obtain my state pension. I want to work, i have to work and yet i cannot find work that uses my skills and pays enough to provide a reasonable standard of living. I can find plenty of low paid, part time work - but this doesn't satisfy me in any way. Why?
