The labour market
The labour market is where employers find their employees, and employees find their jobs.
In the GLA Economics team we provide expert analysis and guidance on London’s labour market. We produce employment projections by sector and borough.
What this analysis is used for
We regularly report on topics relating to London’s labour market, focusing on:
- understanding the recent trends
- projecting what London’s labour market will look like in the future
Policy teams use our analysis to advise their work – for example, if they’re writing a policy about apprenticeships and young people.
Our work also helps the policy teams to understand what skills are needed for the capital to grow into the future.
Our latest publications that fall under this topic are outlined below. You can also view all of our publications

Long-term sickness and the London labour market
Post-pandemic concerns about rising rates of long-term sickness among working-age people have been recognised across the UK. But how severe is this issue in London and who is most affected? GLA Economics has published a new working paper that provides up-to-date analysis and data, with key findings including:
- London faces a long-term sickness challenge. 920,000, or 15%, of working-age Londoners, have a long-term health condition limiting the type or amount of work they can do.
- One-in-10 employed Londoners report a health condition, leading to around 1 million of work hours lost through sickness absences annually.
- Economic inactivity resulting from long-term sickness has grown in London since the pandemic – but much more slowly than in the rest of the UK.
- The rise of mental health issues among young adults in London has been a key driver of the rise in work-limiting long-term sickness in the capital.
How can we measure the number of green jobs
Current Issue Note 62 explores the recently released experimental estimates of green jobs produced for the first time by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in September 2023.
Monitoring the employment impact of mayoral programmes and initiatives
This analysis allows us to estimate the number of jobs associated with GLA Group-led activity from the start of the Mayoral term (2016).
Identifying Green Occupations in London
Working Paper 99 uses an O*NET-based classification of green jobs to identify occupations that are likely to be affected by the transition to a low-carbon circular (‘greener’) economy.
Productivity in London
GLA Economics has produced two reports on productivity to support and complement the London Local Industrial Strategy evidence base.
Potential impacts of skills-based immigration policies in London
The Government recently set out plans for a ‘skills-based’ immigration system post-Brexit. To inform debate, GLA Economics has produced two Current Issues Notes aimed at understanding which areas of London’s labour market are likely to be most affected by the proposals.
Skills strategy for Londoners: Evidence base
This skills evidence base supports the Mayor’s skills strategy, ‘Skills for Londoners’. It covers the demand for and supply of skills, inequalities in skills, employer training, and the training and education system.
