A New Deal for Young People: projects and impact
Why we're focusing on mentoring
Young people, professionals, and a growing evidence base, all show us how important and influential a good quality mentor can be, and the difference they can make to a young person's life.
We also know that approaches to mentoring can vary significantly across London and not all delivery is as high quality as it should be.
By focusing on mentoring, we hope to grow and develop this important area of the youth and community sector and ensure that as many young people in need as possible can benefit from high quality mentoring support.
What we've achieved so far
A significant amount of work is already underway, working closely with our partners to deliver New Deal for Young People. This includes:
-
In Partnership with Action for Race Equality and Bloomberg created a Mentoring Quality Framework - a self-assessment tool to support the quality of mentoring across the voluntary and community sector.
-
Commissioned a mentoring support package alongside the Mentoring Framework to increase accessibility and reach.
-
Commissioned mentoring research, both through the University of East London (with the support of the London Research and Policy Partnership) and through young peer researchers to better understand gaps and areas of need.
-
Funded Mentoring Leader organisations to be ambassadors of mentoring improvement and build the confidence and capacity of the sector.
-
Soon to announce update on Phase 3 of the New Deal for Young People.
Funded projects
The Mayor of London has provided grant funding across a range of programmes to build on the amazing work already happening across London providing mentoring to those young people that need it the most.
Examples of these programmes include:
-
New Deal for Young People - Propel provides the capital’s civil society and communities the flexibility, trust and capacity to make long-term, systemic change in London. The funded projects are increasing the quantity of quality mentoring for disadvantaged young Londoners.
-
Headstart Action supports local organisations to deliver mentoring and youth social action, and provides employability training and work experience opportunities for young people across London.
-
STEAM Mentoring expands quality STEAM mentoring for young people and supports STEAM employers who want to expand or introduce mentoring programmes.
-
Mentoring Leader organisations to be ambassadors of mentoring improvement and build the confidence and capacity of the sector.
Research projects
Mentoring Research Project
We partnered with The London Research and Policy Partnership (LRaPP) to commissioned research that maps youth mentoring provision across London, identifying where the need is greatest and what best practice looks like.
This is part of ensuring that the New Deal for Young People is shaped by evidence and insight.
The University of East London have produced an in-depth review of pan London provision, and key recommendations for policy makers and funders commissioning mentoring services.

Peer Research Project
We commissioned Partnership for Young London to train and support 9 teams of young researchers to deliver peer research projects. These explored which groups of disadvantaged young Londoners are not accessing youth services, the barriers and how we can address these.
This is part of our commitment to ensuring young people’s voices and needs are at the heart of the mission.
Read the research recommendations in the programme report.
"The Government's Youth Policy Team have seen your research and wanted to congratulate you on the work. We thought the process was rigorous and the way you presented the approach, findings and recommendations was clear and really practical. The team will be considering the findings and recommendations alongside other evidence when developing future youth policy. A massive well done to all involved - a really great piece of work." Fiona Stone, Head of Youth Strategy, Civil Society and Youth Directorate, DMS
