A New Deal for Young People: Projects and impact
We're strengthening mentoring for young people
The most disadvantaged young people are disproportionately affected by inequalities across London.
All young people feel these consequences to an extent. But for some young Londoners, it’s exposed just how unequal their access to opportunities is.
The Mayor’s New Deal for Young People (NDYP) is a programme that supports disadvantaged young Londoners access high quality mentoring.
-
100,000+
young Londoners have had access to high quality mentoring
-
£34m
invested in quality mentoring to support the most disadvantaged young Londoners
-
900+
organisations using our Mentoring Quality Framework to improve practice
-
150+
organisations funded by City Hall to provide high quality mentoring
We’re focused on mentoring
Young people, professionals, and research all highlight the importance of high quality trusted relationships. We know that an effective mentor can have a fantastic impact on a young person's life.
We also know that approaches to mentoring can vary significantly across London. Not all delivery is as high quality as it should be.
By focusing on mentoring, we aim to enhance this crucial area of the youth and community sector. We want to ensure that as many young people in need as possible can benefit from high-quality mentoring support.

We’re doing research
To effectively address the needs of disadvantaged young people, we need to data-led and user-centred. As such, we commissioned the following research projects.
Mentoring Research Project
We partnered with the London Research and Policy Partnership (LRaPP) to commission research that maps youth mentoring provision across London. The aim was to identify where the need is greatest and what best practice looks like.
This is part of ensuring that the New Deal for Young People (NDYP) is shaped by evidence and insight.
The University of East London have produced an in-depth review of the pan London provision. They include key recommendations for policy makers and funders commissioning mentoring services.

Young Londoners Research Programme
We commissioned Partnership for Young London, Rocket Science and Young Harrow Foundation to deliver a Young Londoners Research Programme (YLRP). The programme provided training and support nine groups of young researchers so they could design and deliver their own peer research projects.
These projects explored:
- which groups of disadvantaged young Londoners were not accessing youth services
- the barriers they faced
- how we could address those barriers.
This is part of our commitment to ensuring young people’s voices and needs are at the heart of the mission.

The Government's Youth Policy Team have seen your research and wanted to congratulate you on the work. We thought the process was rigorous and the way you presented the approach, findings and recommendations was clear and really practical.
The team will be considering the findings and recommendations alongside other evidence when developing future youth policy. A massive well done to all involved – a really great piece of work.
