What will I be doing?

  • Dojos are championed by individuals all around the world who are passionate about giving young people the opportunity to learn to code. CoderDojo champions are enthusiastic, driven (and often not techie!) volunteers who take charge of setting up and maintaining a Dojo.
  • But champions are never alone! They find volunteers to help them organise their Dojo and mentor the young people. And champions always have CoderDojo's resources and our 200+ projects to help them run their club and engage the kids, and they can always ask us, the CoderDojo team, for our help directly.
  • Essentially what the Champion does is organise the space for 1-2 hours each month, a space we will help you find to run a small club for young people to have fun and learn how to code. :)

What impact will this have?

  • Put simply you will create a club that would not have existed with you creating long lasting impact, building a community.
  • Secondly you will help give skills to young people they didn't have before.
  • And lastly give the opportunity for young people to make friends in a space they didn't have access to before.

When are you needed?

Commitment

  • CoderDojos can’t run without volunteers from the local community. It’s not a huge time commitment, usually just a few hours a month.

The most pivotal role in any Dojo is the Champion. They’re the organiser and provide the perseverance and enthusiasm to start a Dojo and keep it running. Most Dojos will also have at least one technical mentor who will help with the projects activities that the ninjas will work on.
  • CoderDojo needs more organisers!

Champions make sure that everything comes together on the day so that the Dojo can run. A champion doesn’t need to know how to code. They just need to have a passion for
the CoderDojo mission and the drive to make things happen.

The great thing about being a Champion is that you can shape your Dojo in the way that works best for your community. It’s like coaching a youth football team or being a Scout leader - there are a few guidelines to follow but otherwise you’ll have the freedom and autonomy to take the club in the direction you choose.

Don’t worry, you won’t be on your own, the CoderDojo Foundation and its wonderful global community is here to support you. But we won’t be looking over your shoulder telling you what to do.

You can find out everything you need to know about being the Champion for a Dojo in your community in our Champion’s Handbook.
