What will I be doing?

  • Undertake transport journeys for victims as arranged by Transport Team from a place of safety to one of our contracted Safe Houses.
  • Reply to notifications via smartphone app or text message to advise if you are available.
  • Complete and submit relevant paperwork.
  • Ensure that the vehicle used is clean, roadworthy and legal.
  • Share any concerns about the victim with the transport team or relevant agencies whilst adhering to GDPR.

What impact will this have?

  • Volunteers may be the first friendly face a victim sets their eyes on after their trafficking ordeal. A caring, empathetic volunteer can make an amazing difference to a vulnerable victim.
  • You will help & support a victim by transporting them from a place of safety to one of our contracted safe houses enabling a victim access to accommodation and their support entitlements.
  • You will travel with a companion and be able to have social interaction with a Driver or a Chaperone. You'll be able to work as a team and have a positive impact on other volunteers.

Commitment

  • A commitment to complete one journey a month or 12 over a 12-month period.
  • A Transport Journey on average takes around 3 hours, but can be longer depending on the needs of the victim we are transporting.

What else do I need to know?

  • Description or role:. To transport victims of Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking to a place of safety. You may be the first person to show care and empathy to the victim on their journey to recovery.
  • Location:. Journeys can take place anywhere within London and we have a network of Safe Houses across London. Volunteers may be asked to travel outside London to transport a victim and in some cases will be split with other volunteers if over a certain distance or time period.
  • Journeys can also be completed by Tube, Train, Bus etc.
  • Background:. The Salvation Army has delivered the UK Government’s contract to provide support for victims of Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking since 2011. As part of the contract, The Salvation Army are required to provide a safe, effective & demand led Transport Service.
  • COVID19 Precautions:-. We follow all COVID19 guidance as per - https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus. We ask that referrers test victims using lateral flow tests prior to volunteers completing transport. If positive, alternative transport will be sourced. We suggest that masks are worn in enclosed spaces including the car if comfortable wearing them, but we always ask the victim to wear a mask. We ask that all masks are provided by volunteers and claimed back on expenses. We will also reimburse for hand sanitiser, car cleaning products & anything reasonable COVID19 related. We will also require all volunteers to complete a COVID19 risk assessment before commencing volunteering.

Expenses

  • We will reimburse for any travel costs including mileage, refreshments, toll roads, car seats (if travelling with children), COVID 19 precautions such as masks, parking costs & overnight stays if authorised by the transport team on late journeys only.
    All expenses are paid through the Government contract, so will be subject to limits as per the contract

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required
