What will I be doing?

  • Talk English Hounslow is part of a nationwide project, working with isolated people with very low levels of English to help them improve their language skills, access services and get more involved in the community.

Volunteers will be expected to plan and teach one class of 2.5 hours once a week for the course length (11-12 weeks). There are no classes during school holidays. Most classes take place during the daytime but we have one Wednesday evening class and one Saturday morning class.

During the course there will be 3 "activities" which will be a visit to a local library, local gym, local park or other local event. The Volunteer Friends will be involved with planning and assisting these.
  • To be a Talk English Teacher you will need to be able to demonstrate good skills in spoken and written and you will need a level of English that is at least Level 2/GCSE. You will be able to commit to two and a half hours a week to teach English with support and training provided by Hounslow Adult and Community Education. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in Teaching English to ESOL learners.

To be a Talk English "Friend" you will need to be able to demonstrate good skills in spoken and written English at Level 1 and good computer skills at Entry 3. You will also need at least two hours every week to support learners either on Talk English Courses or facilitate Talk English Activities alongside other Talk English Friends.

All Volunteers can expect to receive full mandatory training, equipment and resources for teaching, and reimbursement for travel expenses, in exchange for their volunteering commitment.
  • Skills Description
As a Volunteer Teacher you will teach learners on Talk English Courses and help people to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

As a Talk English Friend, you will be supporting people who speak little or no English and attend a Talk English Course or a less formal conversation class called a Talk English Cafe. You will help Talk English learners to practise English and find out about their local area. You will also accompany them to Talk English Activities outside the classroom.
  • You will help learners to complete enrolment forms; complete an assessment and maintain a register of attendance.

What impact will this have?

  • Volunteer Teachers and Friends will be helping learners to integrate and feel part of the local community and help them to access local services etc by raising levels of English. Talk English Hounslow is part of a nationwide project, working with isolated people with very low levels of English to help them improve their language skills, access services and get more involved in the community.
  • They will help raise levels of confidence.
  • Raising levels of English will help learners, in the long run, to help their children with schoolwork and apply for work among so many other things.
  • Benefits Volunteering as an ESOL teacher is a great opportunity for you to gain experience and develop new skills while making a difference to peoples lives. By volunteering with Talk English you will gain experience of teaching, working as part of a team and working with learners from all over the world. You will also develop your communication, presentation and organisational skills.
  • All Volunteers can expect to receive full mandatory training, equipment and resources for teaching, and reimbursement for travel expenses, in exchange for their volunteering commitment.
