What will I be doing?

  • Working alongside the social worker to develop parenting skills for young mothers
  • Supporting young mother to apply for benefits and signposting to other professionals
  • Supporting young people to develop independent living skills such as cooking, budgeting, registering for GP, dentist etc
  • Supporting young people to have a voice; advocating on their behalf
  • Having a cup of tea and chat with those who are isolated, feel lonely or have little community support
  • Writing weekly chronologies ( you will be trained) on the work you did with the young people

What impact will this have?

  • Invaluable support to young mothers- reducing isolation and helping them cope with motherhood
  • Supporting young mothers to claim benefits that ensure they are not left financially destitute
  • Supporting young mothers to cope with mothering so that it is a joyful ( sometimes) experience. Supporting them to understand it can ( sometimes) be difficult and ways to cope
  • Giving these young mothers and their babies an opportunity to make the best they can out of life.
  • Supporting the transition to adulthood so that the mothers are strong for adult life

Commitment

  • Times and days can be flexible. The role is to work alongside our social worker. Most of the hours will be during the day NOT evenings or weekend.

  • We will support and train you to develop skills that will benefit you as well as the young mothers we care for. This is an ideal role for anyone interested in developing a career in social work / health and social care
  • This is an interesting, fun, rewarding and important role.

Expenses

  • Any travel cost incurred as a result of the volunteering.
    Contribution towards lunch for volunteers working more than 1 day a week

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required

Training

  • Volunteers will be treated as if they are paid staff.
  • Shadowing with a qualified social worker until they are ready to work solo. Monthly supervision. Informal weekly debrief
  • All relevant training including; child protection, other safeguarding training such as domestic violence, parental conflict.
    Training around organisation matter relevant to the business inc the use of our IT system as far as necessary for the role
