What will I be doing?

  • This is a very young but well-supported initiative (Public Health England / College of Medicine / Royal Voluntary Service / Activity Alliance (formerly The English Federation of Disability Sport) etc) but has no funding.
  • The central mission is to develop a DofE equivalent for over 55s which is run off a platform for over 55s membership designed to inform, inspire and encourage others to lead fullest lives around the three pillars of Physical Activity, Learning and Social Contribution. A second challenge based on the same three pillars is operated for community building and is open to people of all ages.
  • A former Marketing Director of Puma (UK and Ireland) sits on our Advisory Board. We have a Vision Statment, a Mission Statement, a name, a logo, a strapline and multiple community connections. A freelancer is being appointed for an equivalent of one day per week to anchor our Marketing and digital communications strategy.
  • We need an experienced marketing and digital communications specialist to help us to build public involvement through social media and by other means. The role would go beyond discussing strategy to taking specific actions within the time constraints which the volunteer would be kindly willing to offer.

What impact will this have?

  • There is a mass of evidence around the difficulties faced by people when they leave the workplace and also in sustaining a healthy productive retirement. There is no central reference point for people in later years to whcih they can turn for ideas, inspiration or motivation. A DofE equivalent which is a nationally recognised "right of passage" would add structure and purpose for those who might otherwise lack either. See Centre for Ageing Better website.
  • Much is said about the problem of an ageing population and it is real. We see as a partial solution to that the resource of that self-same ageing population. Properly motivated they will offer a part solution and also reduce their own dependency on the NHS or social services.
  • Significant organisations have recognised the benefits of this initiative (see above) and have offered non-monetary support and backing. This volunteering position is an opportunity to be part of a team which truly can develop an institution of national significance.
  • At a local level, our secondary challenge (The Charities Challenge) is based on the same three pillars concept but is designed as a tool for building Community and also as a tool for use by charities with their service users in one-to-one interventions.
