Organisation aims / mission / values

  • Inspire and empower local young people to be vocal and active contributors to the social, economic and cultural well-being of their community.
  • Provide young people with skills, training and guidance to help them on their way to becoming young leaders.
  • Provide young people with hands on opportunities to have their voices heard so that they are successful with social action projects.

How we deliver these aims

LiC was set up, and is run, by young people for young people. We aim to inspire and empower local young people to be active contributors to the social, economic and cultural well-being of their community. This is achieved through supporting young people to speak out about issues that matter to them most, and enabling them to sit on consultative bodies so that their views directly shape infrastructure and services for their peers. We also aim to provide young people with opportunities to develop personal resilience and gain the skills and opportunities to succeed through training, volunteering, mentoring or work-experience. All of these activities relate to the wider determinants of health and wellbeing and we would expect all beneficiaries of our programme to report improved mental and physical wellbeing and to have acquired the skills to maintain this over the long term.

Who benefits from our work

The part of Tower Hamlets in which we intend to deliver this project contains a large number of wards which fall within the 5%-10% most deprived in the country on the Index of Multiple Deprivation. Relatively large numbers of young people are NEET, or are at risk of becoming so. Many of our peers have grown up in households lacking confident and successful role models. As a result, they lack the knowledge, confidence and motivation to explore their own potential and face positive challenges. This makes it especially important for us to provide role models in the form of peers who have been supported to develop their positive potential and transmit their inspirational experiences to others
