Primary school maths charity - curriculum developer

Number Champions

Children and young people | Children | Education and literacy

Location: Various (see map)

Start date: Ongoing

What will I be doing?

  • Our volunteer tutors who work directly with children generally have no teaching background. We also have "Mentors" - volunteers with experience as primary school teachers who train and support these volunteers so that they can understand the children's needs and help them acquire skills, confidence, and a sense of achievement in maths. Your role will be to drive the development of support material and processes which the Mentors and In-School Volunteers can use to maximise the effectiveness of the work we do with children.
  • * Review our existing support material and processes. * Working with the Mentors, identify gaps and either source new material from the internet or elsewhere or develop the material yourselves. In cooperation with the Mentors, identify improvements in our processes (including training) and work with our Head of Operations to implement these.
  • Working with the Mentors and other volunteers and staff, identify subjects which would be of interest and use to the In-School Volunteers or the Mentors themselves in their roles, and help source appropriate speakers to give short webinars.

What impact will this have?

  • You will improve the work of our In-School Volunteers in supporting children in maths - and hence help improve the educational and life chances of the children.
  • You will also help the development of Number Champions so that we can produce better outcomes for more children. Our vision is to grow to a national scale - to meet a national need to help children in numeracy. The need has grown with the pandemic and seems likely to grow further as schools and families face increased economic difficulties. We have plans to expand from supporting 220 children this school year to supporting 400 children in 2024-25.
  • You will widen your contact with the world of education, and will be able to develop your own skills and knowledge. You will meet with our other Mentors - also former and current teachers - and develop social ties alongside the technical discussions. You will be valued for your experience and contribution,.

Commitment

  • YOU MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE AS A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER AND A PASSION FOR HELPING CHILDREN WITH MATHS. . THIS WEBSITE DEMANDS A POSTCODE - BUT YOU CAN DO THE ROLE FULLY REMOTELY! (AND A TIME TO SUIT YOU.). The role is to develop the materials we provide to our In-School Volunteers who support child in state primary schools with maths.
  • We have former or current primary school teachers who also volunteer with us (as "Mentors") who give advice and support to the In-School Volunteers. You would work with them to understand the needs of the volunteers and to develop appropriate materials and structures.

What else do I need to know?

  • LOCATION - THIS WEBSITE DEMANDS A POSTCODE LOCATION BUT IN FACT THE ROLE CAN BE DONE COMPLETELY REMOTELY. IT WOULD BE IDEAL IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTEND OCCASIONAL MEETINGS IN CENTRAL LONDON AS THIS WOULD LET YOU MEET OTHER VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF IN PERSON.
  • Our volunteers are generally highly committed and enthusiastic, and it is a great environment to be involved in!. We are also still a young organisation and we are very much open to new ideas - but note we encourage the person with the idea to do some of the development work!.
  • This school year, our volunteers will be supporting over 220 children in 27 schools across 12 London boroughs. Your committment, skills, and experience can help improve how all this works!.
