For many years, London’s success as a place to live and work has mostly been measured in terms of its material wealth.

Research shows that there are many things that influence how Londoners experience living and working in the capital. For example, employment, education, health, the environment, and our communities.

City Hall is developing a Wellbeing and Sustainability Measure that will bring together data on these multiple aspects of our lives that underline wellbeing. This is so that we can track which aspects of our lives are getting better over time and tackle any which are getting worse.

After taking the survey, join in the discussion and tell us more:

  • What do you think of this Wellbeing and Sustainability Measure?
  • Have we missed anything out? If so, please let us know.
  • Is anything about it unclear or confusing?

The discussion ran from 13 June 2022 - 10 July 2022

As a partially sighted pedestrian I would like to know if the Mayor has any plans to deal with the hazard of rogue cyclists and e-scooters riding on pavements rather than roads ?

I think the solution there is better cycling infrastructure. If people feel unsafe to cycle on the roads, they'll often cycle on the pavement, and that's not good for anyone.

It is inappropriate to use platforms as this to drive forward an agenda that, without social media, would have largely gone unnoticed for that such agendas do not serve actually and geniunely AFFECTED people. Best wishes.

Making sure active travel is baked into London and borough development plans and planning decisions is imperative and cuts across several of the wellbeing domains.

There needs to be more investment in good mental health for Londoners. There are some harder-to-reach communities in London like Poles, Romanians and Bangladeshis. Due to factors like Brexit and Prevent's unpopularity they have experienced some alienation. Employers, landlords and libraries need to play their part in ensuring the good mental health and the good health of Londoners. Good mental health cuts NHS hospital A&E admissions, reduces smoking, drug or other addiction (like alcohol) and can act to prevent homelessness also.

Wellbeing and Sustainability. Wellbeing springs from sustainability.

As a thought experiment, change the title from London's Wellbeing AND Sustainability Measure to London's Wellbeing FROM Sustainability Measure.

This puts a different slant on housing where 'good quality housing' would become 'Good quality sustainable housing'. I.e. where it's insulated to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Secure employment becomes 'Secure employment in a sustainable industry/business'. A business which helps the journey to net zero, not hinders it.

"Changing behaviour to protect the environment" is a strengthening measure in the proposal. Really, this has to be the first core action of which all others are a result.

No doubt this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I really think these measures need to be looked at through a test of sustainability. To that end, I highly recommend researching the concept of 'donut economics', an economics based on the ideas of requirements vs what the planet can sustainably supply - rather than the 'growth economics' which appear to underlie many of the measures.

Developers in this country, where the "housing market" (not sustainable, as it relies on the sales of houses! - houses are for living in). are not interested. London is the worst example of the free reign of these developers. Neither the current incumbent nor his predecessor as London Mare see the importance of true sustainability.

It's a good starting point but it will be hard to measure success in terms different to material wealth, as it has been the growth and spread of material wealth that has generally improved living and working. We are also at the early stages of deciding whether we have to work or can afford more leisure time as automation improves (notwithstanding this seems to have increased rather then reduced work since I was at school in the 1970s and had dreams of a two day week). You need to define what London's success as a place to live and work means in terms of understandable and measurable outcomes and then revisit these wellbeing and sustainability measures in the context of these looked for outcomes.

I agree with many of the comments that highlight missing measures. I also think definitions are really poorly constructed too. Did nobody involved in this project ever learn the SMART acronym? Using phrases such as "good" or "satisfied" is pointless because these things can't be consistently defined and each one of us will have our own expectations before we are "satisfied".

I would also like to know how City Hall intends to "tackle" measures that are deteriorating that don't fall within its remit but rather are central government's responsibility.

Healthcare - a glaring omission with regard to wellbeing.

There was nothing about the lives and quality of life of the elderly beyond provision of care homes.

There was also nothing about a sense of belonging: cities can be so lonely and alienating. Heritage (which can contribute to a sense of belonging) was shuffled under "Clean and Sustainable Environment", but there should have been a separate section on the possible roles of heritage and the built environment, in teaching history, recognising diversity, reducing social exclusion, and just making a pleasant environment, and one which contributes to business.

Also agree that littering wasn't addressed; nor were vandalism and (non-artistic!) graffiti.

The ULEZ is infuriating as it targets those with less money and is, basically, a stealth tax. Where is the subsidy that would help people to change to cleaner cars?

I've already commented on what's been missed out and quite frankly don't want to type it all again! One thing that sticks out is the lack of mention of access to good healthcare provision - the steady decline in recent years is very obvious and it was there before covid. There's no availability of preventative medicine either, which would greatly improve mental and physical health.

In terms of zero emission policy, I feel there's been a knee jerk approach to implementation, with ridiculous and dangerous bollards in the middle of the road and floating bus stops which have decreased the quality of life AND air for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists. So I guess the mayor has managed to displease EVERYONE equally. Charging lots of money to drive through certain areas (ULEZ, congestion charge) punishes the poorest and favours the rich. There should be subsidising for buying cleaner vehicles (not everyone can cycle!), cheaper public transport (too expensive) and a real drive to install solar panels on ALL available roofs in London, including and most certainly, on council property, which would make energy more affordable to ALL.

The social engineering that's been going on for many years now, through unaffordable housing and lack of council properties/affordable housing (landlords have all the power) is tearing apart communities to the point that many places are just souless wastelands where people don't know and don't trust each other.

This means they can do a little tweak here and another there and say they have delivered. Like colourful crossings and a few planters with plants they don't tend and so they become full of weeds and have rubbish dumped in them.

I have a garden. I love it. Sadly I have the kind of neighbours that throw their rubbish (nappies, empty wine bottles and so much more) into my garden. Another neighbour has planted a tree that is so big and so high that my garden is mostly in shade. I can't really enjoy my garden. I have a place to live but the neighbour above is so noisy and nosey I have no privacy and unable to relax. I can't really enjoy my home. In my community new shops have opened and it shows the balance of people in the area has gone; 1 coffee shop has white people who are new to the area and 1 coffee shop has the community. The destruction of my local area is advancing and those who are consumers without having to consider basic needs are sweeping out those who do. Local authorities want these people because they can focus put on a few events with entrance fees and this will keep them happy. Local authorities are no longer concerned with residents from all backgrounds and are chasing the money. Sadly local authorities are focused on pretty planters and colourful crossings rather than decent housing, jobs or tackling the issues in the area.

What is the matter with these people who want to spoil your garden throwing their rubbish everywhere? The same happens so often here in Newham as well. But I am determined to keep the street outside my home clear of rubbish. Some men sit in cars at night eating take-aways, throwing the rubbish onto the street, and sometimes my garden. They spend the rest of their time staring into their mobile phones. Are they Uber drivers, or are they pursuing some other more nefarious trade? In the morning I put all the rubbish outside my house into a bag and then into the dustbin. As long as I'm here they will never win. Don't despair. Go onto your Council's Twitter account and reply to anything, tell them all about it. We're all paying tax that pays their salaries, make them work for it. Good luck.

Start reducing (to zero) the numbers of aircraft flying directly low over central London. Over 1000 a day approaching Heathrow. 300 into London City. This traffic shatters communities, makes outdoor living unpleasant, poisons children, those with breathing difficulties, insects, animals and plants, and remains a security risk. Cars are NOT the only problem!
