Green bus stops

The roofs of hundreds of bus stops have been covered in plants as a gift to honeybee, by a city in the Netherlands.
Mainly made up of sedum plants,
The shelters not only support the city’s biodiversity, such as honey bees and bumblebees, but they also help capture fine dust and store rainwater.

The roofs are looked after by workers
More than 300 bus stops have had their roofs transformed by plants to help biodiversity such as honey bees and bumblebees
The roofs are intended to improve air quality as well as supporting the city's insects
The roofs are just one of many measures being taken to improve the air quality of the city

This has already been tried by TfL- one was installed at Baker Street: https://www.london.gov.uk/questions/2019/17308#a-174122

They are really, really expensive due to the re-engineering required of the bus shelter (they have to withstand the weight of a number of adults standing on the shelter). With the added weight of the soil/substrate and the plant matter, and full saturation when it rains, and you need a very engineered structure.

If you want biodiversity on streets- street trees are always the cheapest and easiest - best value for taxpayers.

Love this idea, and would love to see it work. There are bus stops already that have (or are meant to have) plants on top - it provides a pathway for pollinators and other insects/wildlife between wildlife hubs (like parks - sorry, can't remember all the technical terms!). Sadly, some of these are looking very neglected. But what a fabulous idea if we can look after them properly!

I am concerned about the costs of this scheme. Trees are planted round London and they die because no-one waters them and I can see the same thing happening here.

How about providing an estimation of the costs involved in these ideas - that might make for a more realistic question and opinion forum.

This is an excellent point but it is not an area I personally know anything about.

Good idea in theory - but the labour costs in planting and maintenance would be horrendous.
Perhaps a good job for people on community service sentences.
