This is your chance to put your question to the Mayor, Sadiq Khan and Members of the London Assembly about their current plans, priorities and policies for the capital, at the first ever People’s Question Time Online, on 12 November 2020, 7pm - 9pm.

The Mayor is responsible for:

  • a better police service for all Londoners;

  • a better criminal justice service for London;

  • keeping children and young people safe;

  • tackling violence against women and girls;

  • standing together against hatred, intolerance and extremism.

The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body that holds the Mayor to account and investigates issues that matter to Londoners.

What would you ask them about safety?

Please keep your question short, relevant and constructive.  If another member has already asked a similar question to the one you were going to ask, you can show your support by commenting on that question.

You can submit your question until midnight on Sunday 1 November. Read more about the shortlist process in the FAQs

The discussion ran from 05 October 2020 - 02 November 2020

Why introduce speed limits and restriction measures such as speed humps and tables, but fail to enforce them? Don't say it is the job of the Police, because they are too busy. Average speeds on residential roads in LB Sutton increased dramatically during lockdown and light traffic volumes, and have not reduced much since July. How many more deaths and/or serious injuries are required before someone, anyone in authority does anything to improve road safety??

Police do not tackle violence against women. Why is that?

Could you explain why the mayor did a photo opportunity visit to the scene of the the murder of an Asian young man and ignored the cries of MPs in other parts of London?

Could you explain why the police are hyper focused on targeting black men and why they are focused on policing people's personal opinions? In the meantime if you are burgled, had a car stolen, etc there is no focus.

During this pandemic I have seen one police officer with a mask.

Could you explain why officers are not wearing masks?

Q. Are there any new ideas or tried and tested schemes that have worked in other cities we could look at to significantly reduce violent crime?
Q. How much do we really know about human trafficking in London? And what is being done to stop human trafficking. Is there a specific task force for human trafficking? If not should one be created?
SOFT CRIME Q. There seems to be certain crimes that aren't being responded to because of lack of police resources eg. Theft from a motor car. Have police numbers been reduced? If not why isn't all reported crimes followed up? If yes, why have police numbers been cut?

Growing motorcycle theft in London has lead to insanely high insurance premiums.There are ways to reduce theft in urban areas that don't necessarily involve increasing police numbers. The mayor should think out of the box on this one.

Will the mayors office commit to more and better paid police staff to move operational officers from office jobs and onto the streets. They always publish the changes in police numbers but the numbers of police staff have fallen so police officers are performing administrative roles so the numbers do not decline but the numbers actually policing the community have significantly reduced.

More and more I hear about my children's friends being mugged for their phones or their bikes at knife point often during broad daylight, outside school, at train stations and on the various commons here in south London - usually teenagers on teenagers. The lack of Police on the streets seems to allow the various gangs to run amok with no chance of them being seen perpetrating the crimes never mind being stopped. Our kids are constantly being told to hand over whatever they are being asked for - which they should obviously do to keep themselves from harm, BUT this just makes the muggers more confident and bold - and it increases the frequency of the muggings.  What is to be done?

Just look at this thread from our local online newsletter:

I would like to ask the Mayor why he is not forcing bus drivers to refuse unmasked passengers from boarding buses.  Compliance with mask wearing on buses seems to be falling and seems low compared to the Underground.  It seems to be the obvious point of control.

Why are you authorising unprovoked police brutality on peaceful protestors?  Examples include Trafalgar Square Sept 26 and 19th.
