This is your chance to put your question to the Mayor, Sadiq Khan and Members of the London Assembly about their current plans, priorities and policies for the capital, at the first ever People’s Question Time Online, on 12 November 2020, 7pm - 9pm.

The Mayor is responsible for

  • ensuring our public transport network runs safely and reliably
  • enabling more Londoners to walk and cycle by improving streets and reducing road danger
  • greening transport by reducing traffic and vehicle pollution and increasing use of renewable energy on the network
  • unlocking growth and improving connectivity, putting walking, cycling and public transport at the heart of new developments
  • making transport affordable and accessible for more people

The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body that holds the Mayor to account and investigates issues that matter to Londoners.

What would you ask them about transport?

Please keep your question short, relevant and constructive.  If another member has already asked a similar question to the one you were going to ask, you can show your support by commenting on that question.

You can submit your question until midnight on Sunday 1 November. Read more about the shortlist process in the FAQs

The discussion ran from 05 October 2020 - 02 November 2020

The effect of the pandemic will change forever the way Londoners travel. As a result of the dramatic reduction in people using public transport do you anticipate having to close stations or reduce services on the tube? Will you be cutting bus services?  Finally can you give us an assurance that those Boroughs who have previously abused things like yellow box junctions or parking will not be allowed to continue this to raise revenue.

Why is the Mayor trying to systematically destroy our city? Isn't it enough that we're trying to contend with Covid-19 without making it virtually impossible to travel around London, unless of course you're a cyclist. It seems as if motorists are being penalised at every turn with the extended and exorbitant congestion charge, the insanity of the LTN's (which largely seem to have been introduced without any consultation with TFL and the plethora of new and enlarged bike lanes (which half the time aren't even used by cyclists who seem to prefer to terrorise pedestrians (without fear of any legal recourse).

Agreed, these LTN's are very poorly thought out. Has caused complete gridlock since the introduction in my borough.

While there are fewer passengers travelling, what is being done to improve the infrastructure of the underground system to ensure we have a transport network suitable for a world-class city?

Hammersmith Bridge has been closed without any progress which is a shamble. Also there is no redirection signs when entering to London from the south side of the river (by car) - people not knowing the area are totally lost, like myself a couple of weeks ago, when I tried to find my way back home to Notting Hill. I was forced to drive around the Southside for over an hour because no redirection signage in place - which is not good for the environment either. The bridge closure has resulted massive and environmentally unaccepted traffic jams and ques to the other closest bridges and nearby roads/areas. A lot of money has been wasted by the City Hall for this Hammersmith Bridge issue and now the Government has got enough of it too, and have set up the specific task group for the matter. Why you, the Mayor of London, have let this all happen? Not having money is not acceptable response as the Londoners and tax payers are not responsible of how your office, the Mayor of London, has run the city's economy close to the bankrupt. The Hammersmith bridge is essential for the transport and not everybody can use the public transport and spent hours for the journey, especially disabled drivers who are hardly able to use the public transport - what you say to us? are you going to put up redirector signage? how you ensure the bridge opens ASAP?  Kind regards, MK, Notting Hill, London

I never drive in London but use public transport nearly all the time. I have 2 questions on the same subject.

Can the Mayor and TFL review the expansion of cycle lanes as they are cause increased congestion, disrupt bus routes, substantially lengthen the time taken for a bus journey.  Far more people use buses than the empty cycle lanes.

Cyclists are the source of much anti social behaviour and their antisocial behaviour is not policed effectively.    Even when there is a cycle lane they prefer to use the pavements, cyclists generally pay no attention to traffic lights or traffic signs, overtake in heavy traffic causing numerous accidents ands they don't acknowledge one way streets.

TFL have no popular mandate to extend cycle lanes and the funds allocated to this project should be used to buy hydrogen buses.

I live and work (legitimately) as a Composer in a studio literally a stone's throw from the HS2 development site in Euston. According to my tax returns and as a result of having to temporarily move my business away from the Euston area my tax returns tell me I've lost approx £100,000 to HS2. If you're response is "So What??" it simply echoes the response from HS2 themselves, along with the 'Independent' Construction Commissioner for HS2, Sir Mark Worthington, my MP Sir Keir Starmer, Camden Council and various local self-interest community groups. Apart from the 24 hour noise, pollution levels (mainly from lung-busting dust levels) are intolerable for many more than just me during the 20 year build period. Isn't it about time that someone started to make HS2 accountable in Euston and Camden? If your body took firm, visible and morally accountable action, the positive impact would be felt by victims ot HS2's 'Let's See What We Can Get Away With' mantra all the way up the line - not just in North London!

Virtually all the TfL publicity is about cycling and walking. Very little has been about getting confidence to use public transport especially in off peak. And there appears to be no role for motoring at all. Why?

Why are you trying to wreck London as an international commercial and cultural centre by building wide bicycle lanes on main roads that reduce vehicle traffic to single lanes, discourage drivers to go to the centre and cause huge tailbacks at junctions - thus increasing the CO2 gases in the atmosphere ?   These bicycle lanes are empty when it is raining or at night-time yet still cause the same congestion.  Personally, I have stopped going from my suburb to the West End and so have all my friends as a result of your actions - and business in London will suffer and die - for the sake of a few cyclists.

London wide, councils have been abusing powers to close roads and introduce Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. These have angered a lot of residents who were not consulted - and Hackney, for one, has forced through schemes that were previously rejected by the local community. The scheme has resulted in gridlock chaos on the main roads, which i understand are TFL's responsibility, bringing the citys' businesses to their knees, TFL bus routes to a standstill, emergency services to have seriously delayed journey times. There are now MUCH WORSE levels of pollution on the main roads with locals using low emission vehicles forced to use the same routes as heavy goods vehicles from all over the country. Residents have been corralled and kettled into their immediate area, like an isolation ghetto resulting in lower social mobility and connectivity with the rest of London and the national road network. Will the Mayor intervene to ensure London is not closed by councils pursuing an ideological social cleansing policy and discriminating against drivers who are Londoners too, many depending on vehicles for work or health needs

This question actually relates to the environment and transport. Lewisham Council closed many roads in my area recently. The consultation was carried out last year and created a lot of negative comments. The road closures were then implemented using COVID as a reason. Since the closures the whole of the surrounding main roads have been in grid lock, causing more fumes to be concentrated in these areas and the buses do not run on time. One accident or road malfunction then closes the main road with no other route as an alternative. Children are late being dropped at school and late being picked up all while the schools are trying to stagger the times of children arriving and leaving. The buses are caught up in the traffic and hence l have needed to get off and walk. Emergency vehicles, district nurses, delivery etc are all delayed in getting to their destination. Businesses in the local area not only are being affected by COVID, they have also lost their passing trade. Massive lorries now drive down my road where they never did before as they are lost. Cars now speed as there is less traffic. We have now been told that we have to keep this for 18 months so that they have time to consider if it is working or not. How does the Mayor consider that this is an improvement in transport, environment and local business?

Has the proposed Bakerloo line extension to Lewisham and possibly beyond been canceled?

Whilst I understand that there are financial constraints following covid-19, has this project been given a lower priority than Crossrail 2? If so why?

Since June pre-9am weekday morning travel concessions for older Londoners have been suspended. This has had a profound impact on older keyworkers, carers and others making essential journeys. Would you like the suspension to be lifted and can you commit to maintaining travel concessions which are a lifeline to so many Londoners over 60.

Hello,

The changes to the congestion charge times ( 07:00-22:00, every day ) is very very unfair to people living withing the congestion charging zone, despite the 90% discount. Many have signed leases or purchased homes based on the fact that the congestion charge times are 07:00-18:00, Mon Fri, could you please revert to these times (07:00-18:00, Mon Fri) for residents within the congestion charge zone ?

Regards
