free oystercard for London council-tax payers
Give every London resident a free oystercard for London Transport paid for by a levy on council tax. This would discourage car use if public transport was already paid for. Tourists could continue to pay fares as they rarely drive anyway. This would cut pollution in the capital

Show full commentThis is a great idea but very costly. It could be modified by giving free oystercard (or an oystercard with, say £500 loaded on it) to every NHS worker in London below a certain salary. It would encourage public transport use amongst NHS key workers and would also be a reward for their hard work during the pandemic. It's a proposal that is very likely to be widely welcomed by Londoners - even car users!

Community Member 4 years agoI like the idea but do bear in mind it would be quite a large levy at around £800 per London resident or £2000 per household.
