Better broadband internet connection
Does poor internet connection affect you? If so, how?
Internet connections are as important to keep this city going as energy, water and waste management services. They should be treated with the same importance.

In fact, only Virgin Media offers anything like the speeds shown for my address with all other providers having to utilise BT Openreach's very low speed network which has a maximum speed for my address of around 4 Mbps. This is disgraceful for a city like London.
To access Virgin's monopolistic high speed network alone whilst retaining telephony and TV services from other providers would add around £25 to my monthly outlay. Why is Virgin not required - like BT Openreach - to offer its network at wholesale prices to all other broadband providers? This would, at a stroke, enable high speed access for large parts of the city not capable of obtaining high speed access thorough BT Openreach and, by default, all other broadband providers.

Would like other options such as cable or fibre, but not available in my area as yet. Might as well stick with the devil I know than change to anyone else, because we are all beholden to Openreach.

Show full commentI've started commissioning gigabit broadband providers to install lines into social housing estates that the company I work for owns and manages in SW London. It's a good way for alternative, hyperfast providers to get a foothold in areas as housing providers and Local Authorities have the scale to make the projects viable.
It has been a challenge to make the business case though, and I'd like to see more government incentives to sponsor associations to undertake these projects.

Community Member 7 years agoI read that internet connection speeds are so fast in South Korea that they can download a full-length film in a few seconds. Why can't London and the whole UK have better speeds?

Community Member 7 years agoI work from home, so need a good fast broadband. I pay for this but do not always receive the service level I pay for.

Community Member 7 years agoThe BT monopoly means that they will never treat people the same. They're only going after the money. I'm personally affected, with connection speed of 2-3Mbps, just because I'm connected to a cabinet that hasn't got enough utilities.
