Show full commentI got into cycling a few months ago. Initially bought a cheap single-speed bike and finally made the move to purchase a second-hand road bike last Wednesday.
However, less than 12 hours later my road bike was stolen despite being parked in a public area with a gold secure sold D-lock. 3 days later my original single-speed bike was also stolen from a locked bike shed in front of my flat (also had a D-lock).
So all the cycle highways and bike infrastructure have allowed me to get into cycling. However crime in my area (Tower Hamlets) and all the news about cyclists getting hit by automobiles are stopping me from doing more of it.

Official Representative 6 years agoThanks everyone for taking part in this discussion. It's great to see such a variety of sport activities.
What role does technology play when thinking about sport/physical activity? Do you book classes or pitches online? Perhaps you track your running or cycling routes through apps like Strava or Garmin? If not, why not?
How easy is it to find opportunities to take part in sport online?
Where do you go for information on where to take part in sport?

I find that it's relatively easy to find information about sports clubs/events online. My partner and I recently joined the Freecycle event as part of the Prudential bicycle race. That was really good and we'd like to do more similar events in the future.

Because of the freedome, the only sport I ever enjoyed was cycling and swimming but cycling is not an option now as I would hate to cycle at a gym, don't have a bike and anyway the roads are too scary these days.

My time might have been better if it was't so stinkingly hot.I have a bikr to, but still a little bit scared ofcycling on London roads. It still remiains that the best way of starting to get fit is to walk, then you just have to find something you like doing and get in the habit.

The local swmming pool is to geared towards kids and swimming lesons and doesn;t leave enough room for adults lane swimming. However London Fields Lido adults only is brilliant.

Play badminton, table tennis and Short Tennis now instead of tennis as I am now in my 70’s, advantage being we can play all year round instead of being reliant on the weather. However, it would be great to have a sports hall within reasonable travelling distance from us, despite living in London Barnet, our nearest sports hall is almost 6 miles away and almost an hours travelling time, ridiculous, They provide leisure centres nearer to me which do not have a sports hall otherwise we could do a lot more. I believe it is because Gyms make a lot more money. Very little is done to encourage older people to participate in sport apart from gentle exercise, tai chi and maybe a little bit of dance and movement.

Show full commentI've enjoyed playing badminton for a number of years and I'd recommend it to anyone if they have reasonable agility and fitness. I'm lucky to have friends to play with regularly but its only 1 hour per week. However I can also choose to play in a club (same day/time) which has a 3 hour session and suits me better. They welcome all standards and ages which is great for old codgers such as myself. Its not local unfortunately but I'm prepared to travel to it because its friendly, social and welcoming.
In addition to that I try and get a long walk in once per week somewhere in the nearby countryside (again with friends) and I'm going on a Nordic walking course in the autumn.
I dont really like gyms so I bought my own treadmill last winter which enabled me to walk long distances inside when it was sub zero outside.
To take up swimming again would be great but I cant stand the chlorinated water used in pools. Sorry, but I have NO interest in cycling. The risks of injury or death on city roads is far too great.
Thats about it. The garden gives a bit more activity and I often try and park away from the supermarket entrance so there's a bit of an extra walk involved!

Show full commentOther than walking a lot I am, due to my age (71) unable to enjoy taking part in exercise due to cuts in council funding for activities for the elderly. Our local pop in (a charity) has to part fund seated activities (yoga, and keep fit) and line dancing which they are finding increasingly difficult to do. Our local leisure centre and pool had a lot going on for older people which was free but now it has been handed over to another company, people have to 'join' and they no longer provide free activities for older people. Our nearest Age UK activities are an impossible journey away by either car or bus despite being only 3 miles. Activities that would be perfect for older people like Tai Chi or Gi Gong are held in church halls in the late evening. Help us to help ourselves please.

Handing over council facilities only makes the matter worse as funding always goes down at the same rate as prices go up for private profit.

Countless times, I have seen people cycling with a phone in one hand. Once, I saw a man cycling in front of a bus, towards a major road junction, with a phone in BOTH hands and his eyes on the phone! I have seen cyclists pedalling diagonally across lanes of moving traffic.

I participate in lawn bowls and used to bowl all year round until my local borough closed its indoor facility. In the winter to play I have to travel 15/20 miles outside my local borough to play. II used to cycle regularly until recently. Despite using cycle lanes I find the traffic very intimidating. I now do a daily walk as part of my efforts to keep fit.

Some places around the world have a minimum passing distance for motorists passing a cyclist. Why not in our city?

I haven't noticed any rise in hate crime as a result of team sports. Quite the reverse. It is the exclusion from team/community activities that leads to hate, suspicion and hostility towards "the other".

The bullying, the "jolly team games" the cult of the "leader" ( or should I say "guide"? ) the assumption that cold, terror & violent exercise were somehow good for you - all the lies that all totalitarian regimes use.
NOTE; In the time since then I have actually done fencing & archery, but there you are largely competing against your self.
I also found, at age 17 that little me, who NEVER did any sp*rts at all - was fitter & had a longer endurance than all those who did - the school sent volunteers to a week in the Lake District - the ONLY pupil who went out every day - was me.
Sp*rts are 150% unnecessary
