Culture and economy
Have your say on the proposed spending plans for culture and economy in this year's Budget 2020-21.
In the Priorities for Londoners survey, you ranked Culture and Sport as the capital’s highest performing area, with 7 in 10 of you satisfied. Opportunities for Londoners to take part in sports, and opportunities to learn creative skills, were highlighted as key areas for improvement.
You see, ‘work to attract business and investment’, and, ‘innovation and technological development’ as the two strongest areas for London’s economy. Your greatest concerns are with fair wages and building the infrastructure for a growing population.
Over the last three years:
- Delivery of East Bank has begun – a new culture and education district at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the £1.1 billion East Bank scheme is one of the world’s largest and most ambitious cultural and education districts and is funded through a combination of Government funding, contributions from partners, receipts from the sale of residential developments, philanthropic donations and GLA funding
- City Hall launched the Good Work Standard in July 2019. Amongst other things, this requires accredited employers to pay all staff at least the London Living Wage, currently £10.75 an hour. Since launch, 49 companies have signed up to this, covering over 191,000 employers.
The discussion ran from 07 January 2020 - 07 March 2020

London should be the leading edge international city in improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions - this should include GLA / London Transport direct impacts - moving to electric vehicles asap, licensing policy - requiring taxis and private hire (e.g. Uber) to use electric vehicles and using powers to make significant additional charges on vehicles throughout London which are not electric or at least low poluting hybrid.

Tackling dirty air is vital. Diesel engines – buses, taxis and SUVs – are given a green light to continue to poison us.
Re-opening youth clubs and libraries is important. And anything you can do to support the rail network in the capital and reduce car traffic would be appreciated

invest in roads, transport, social and health care, housing, policing or cut the council tax before giving more money to football!

How many people need to be murdered before you'll belatedly have the good sense to prioritise Police funding.
If you don't, you can be certain you'll be looking for a job very soon.
Otherwise, cancel the rest, put every penny into Policing. There's no point in having any other aspect of London funded if we are at such a high risk of attack by criminals with knives.
The priority list is:-
Police
Police
Police
Nothing else.
Make London safe then we can look at other initiatives.

I like live music and street performance by musicians who play well any instrument but not with amplified background accompanying muzak. There's no skill and it's usually far too loud and intrusive, so ban it please Mayor as many other cities have done, including Edinburgh.
Many European cities celebrate mostly free events on Midsummer day and night all the panoply of music on offer on street corners, in concert and dance halls or anywhere outside. Why doesn't London join in this festival of music/fête de la musique on the same day? It would at least show after the disgrace of Brexit some solidarity with the EU, particularly as London voted overwhelming to Remain, my borough Lambeth the most in Britain, according to Lambeth council.
Finally, unrelated but I can't see anywhere to comment on public transport. Why have so many bus stops had signage removed showing when next buses are due? I see no reason why it's expected that people carry with them constantly a mobile phone to find out information that should be easily publicly available for free. My mobile company charges me for each non geographical call for text numbers at bus stops. Suggest the Mayor goes to Paris or most other cities which display this information so much better and in cleaner environment than too often grubby London bus stops. Should be made a top priority in any budget proposals.

Show full commentI'm utterly disgusted to see that Boris Johnson is planning to hold a "Festival of Britain" to celebrate the xenophobes and nationalists' victory in dragging the UK out of the EU. The Tories want to celebrate stealing rights, freedoms and opportunities from millions of people, both British and European, and this 'festival' is how they plan to do so.
Fortunately, it seems that this 'festival' won't take place in London, an amazing multicultural and global city which voted 59.9% to Remain in the EU.
In order to defend and preserve London's culture, I would like to ask Mayor Khan to say a resounding 'NO' to any proposal to hold such a festival anywhere in or near London.
It's bad enough that we should have to put up with 20,000 Brextremists in Parliament Square in the evening of 31st January. That should NOT be allowed. Why should the far-right be allowed to gloat about its narrow victory which is based on nothing more than lying, cheating, criminality and malign outside intereference?

The emphasis on public transport is good, but whenever travel is being discussed, it needs to be hand-in-hand with improved cycle lanes and pedestrian routes, even for medium-distant journeys. I know plenty of people who will cycle up to an hour, across London, if they think it's a safe route.
