Olympic Legacy
The areas surrounding the main Olympic site at Stratford could provide around 32,000 new homes and 1.35 million square metres of new and improved commercial floorspace.
The Olympic Legacy supplementary planning guidance (SPG) sets out a vision for the area, which includes:
- making it one of the best places to live and work in London
- improving connectivity across and into the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
- creating new family housing and schools.
Who produced the SPG?
We produced the Olympic Legacy SPG in collaboration with:
- Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest boroughs
- London Thames Gateway Development Corporation
- Transport for London (TfL)
- Olympic Delivery Authorities’ Planning Decisions Team
What guidance does the SPG provide?
The SPG provides guidance for:
- individual landowners and developers when planning investment
- local councils and the London Legacy Development Corporation on evolving and relating to the emerging metropolitan centre at Stratford, and the opportunities presented by the legacy of the 2012 Games
- other public sector bodies and agencies, such as TfL, British Waterways and the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, regarding development and investment priorities
Which London Plan policies does the document provide guidance on?
The potential of the Olympics to deliver fundamental economic, social and environmental change in east London is identified in policy 2.4 of the London Plan.
The Plan also confirms the Mayor’s commitment to use the Games and its legacy to close the deprivation gap between the Olympic boroughs and the rest of London.
Although these policies relate to the London Plan 2011, they are still relevant to the London Plan 2015.
The documents
The Olympic Legacy SPG was agreed by Sir Edward Lister, the Mayor’s Chief of Staff and Deputy Mayor for Planning, on 20 June 2012 following public consultation. It replaces the Mayor’s Lower Lea Valley Opportunity Area Planning Framework where the two documents overlap geographically.
