Since 2016 the Mayor has invested millions in his air quality programme.
Alongside the ULEZ, we are taking a number of steps to improve London’s air quality, including:
- Transforming London’s bus fleet, with all of London’s buses meeting or exceeding the ULEZ standards, with over 950 buses being zero emission at the tailpipe.
- Transforming London’s taxi fleet by no longer licensing new diesel taxis, with over 6,500 zero emission capable taxis on London’s streets.
- Speeding up electric vehicle infrastructure, with over 13,000 electric vehicle charge points in London (accounting for over a third of all charge points in the UK).
- Making it easier and safer to walk and cycle, including working with the boroughs to deliver over 500 school streets.
- Helping boroughs and local businesses implement their own projects to improve local air quality through the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.
- Creating new and imaginative approaches to reducing emissions from all sources, such as the London wide construction machinery Low Emission Zone and collaborative local projects with the boroughs.
The Mayor is also taking other measures to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises including
- Planting over 470,000 trees.
- Funding 19 rewilding projects across the city, restoring or creating over 250 hectares of habitat – the equivalent of ten St James’ Parks.
- Upgrading 4,500 homes through the Warmer Homes Programme to help improve their heating, insulation and ventilation.
