Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)
Improving the teaching and learning of geography and encouraging more pupils to study this subject at GCSE and A-level.
Rediscovering London’s Geography
The Society worked with 15 Partner schools who were directly involved in delivery with a wider CPD network of schools. The focus was to implement the new National Curriculum in Geography effectively across Primary and Secondary levels.
At the start of the project 43% of network teachers felt they were ‘not well prepared’ to implement the curriculum. By the end of the project 80% of these teachers felt ‘well’ or ‘very well’ prepared. Levels of subject confidence rose, particularly amongst network teachers, from 48% and 39% feeling ‘quite’ or ‘very’ confident at the start to 100% across either category at the end.
The project also ran inspirational activities for over 7,000 geography pupils to promote the relevance of geography to further study and careers.
The project’s made me feel there is a network and there’s someone [the RGS] I can talk to who’s an expert … that’s been a big positive impact on myself and I’m able to use this for next year’s curriculum and help out my colleagues.
The Royal Geographical Society was warded further funding through Subject Knowledge Hubs programme.
