London Early Years Foundation (LEYF)

LEYF promoted excellence in early years literacy and numeracy teaching through upskilling of nursery staff and pedagogical conversations with parents.

Each One Teach One

The project aimed to improve the teaching of numeracy and literacy skills to preschool children, thereby enabling those children to start school better prepared, and to improve the children's Home Learning Environment. The project achieved this by developing the knowledge, confidence and skills of nursery staff, to ensure that they could deliver a high quality, consistent, age-appropriate curriculum in numeracy and literacy and by training staff to hold effective pedagogical conversations with parents to sustain children’s learning at home. The project was delivered to 78 teachers in 31 schools. Findings from digital programmes introduced to capture progress and impact evidenced an 8% improvement in nursery teachers' confidence in teaching literacy and numeracy, which led to a 16% improvement in knowledge and skills, assessed before and after the intervention and a 4% improvement in children’s attainment.

I was very happy for L. to be part of the scheme as it helps us as parents understand how you [the nursery] encourage and assess a child's development [and] helps bring about a level of continuity between what goes on at home and what happens at the nursery which I think is reassuring for the child" "I am more confident talking to parents and supporting them with Home Learning Activities
